bang & out of gear help!

I have a 62 Evinrude 40 Hp. with a split type gearcase. The last time out the motor would go bang and shake the whole boat. This only happened in forward -neutral and reverse no bang. The faster I went intensified the bang, it happened every 15 seconds - cut my trip real short.
My question - is it worth it to rebuild the gear box on a motor that old or buy a used one? (i'm assuming that the gears are damaged ) If I buy a used gearcase how do I know what to get is there a part# I need? Also what questions should I ask to determine if it is a good one. What is a good source for it Thanks Jim P.S. should I scrap the whole thing and get a set of oars?

Re: bang & out of gear help!

Jim,
It sounds like you have a bad clutch dog. You also could have damaged gears as well. You should take it apart and see. There's a remote possibility that you could reverse the clutch dog and get a little more use out of it. You probably would be better off if your's is bad to get a used lower unit. Laingsoutboards.com, ebay, or aomci.org's free want ads/classifieds would be a good place to look.
Good luck,
JBJ

I finally got my motor back running; I took the lower unit apart and it really didn't look too bad. I reversed the clutch dog and honed the mating surface with a stoned chucked in my drill press. I think the real culprit was that the upper shift rod was not engaged the way it should have been. The bolt in the clamp should fit into the groove in the shift rod. Mine was not all the way in, but the shift rod was being held by the coupling. Thanks everyone for your help, this is a great site
