Barrel Test - How to Remove Oil Slick?

I've finished tuning up my JW-14 Johnson 3HP. Thanks to all of the great info on this site it was a great success.

Are there any tips / tricks to removing an oil slick from my test barrel? I've tried skimming the oil off of the top with a pale but I am getting more water than oil.

Are there any tips / tricks to cleaning up before emptying the barrel? I have come across a commercial "test tank cleaner" but I don't do this often enough to require that.

idont know if this will help you--but helped me,,,,,i too am doing extensive testing in a barrell and a decarb and got lots of sludge......


i let the barrel cool for some time---then i poured 3 gallon jugs of ice ice cold water from jusgs in my refridgerator,,,


the oil and sludge imediatly thickened up and came more together in the top of the barrell....


made it alot more easier to skim that sludge from the top----i had alot...i disposed of that batch at the collection site.....and just hose syphoned the rest into the heavy graveld driveway,,,



you wont get all the sludge--- but after many days of constant testing -- i found this method helped 85 percent better for me...


just only thing i could come up with....


when done i scrub my barrell with mean grean airplane grade cleaner- toilet brush and hose water,,and store it till next test.....


ice cold water realy thickens up the sludge to remove with a cut open milk jug.


but im interested to learn if someone hasa bettermethod

Throw slices of bread on top. They will float and absorb the top layer of goop.

Works for getting grease out of gravy too!!

Laugh if you want but i've been removing a lot of GUNK from a motor i've been fooling with & the last thing i do is add a cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid to the water then run a few more minutes then drain
Motor & barrel are sqeeky clean

Thanks for sharing the tips. I will be sure to try some of them out after my next barrel test. One good thing about the oil slick was that it caught a bunch of mosquitos

Last night I ended up skimming 99% of the oil off the top and siphoning the water out with a garden hose. As the water level dropped the oil stuck around the edge of the barrel and by the time it was down to the bottom the water was clear. Once the water was all out I used some biodegradable degreaser to clean up the sides of the barrel with a rag.

On the siphoning the water out part if you drill a hole close to the bottom the same size as a livewell flip plug ( 7/16"1/2", ect ) it will make life easier

lay a page of newspaper on the surface for about 10 seconds, then remove. Do this after each test.

Works like a charm....

I put some detergent in my tank and it breaks down the oil. I only change the water after every five runs. This gives the detergeant longer to work on the oil.

you can buy oil absorbent pads at any auto parts store that absorb oil but not much water. They are useful for picking up oil from the bilges of boats also.

It sounds silly but bird feathers. What do you see when a bird goes swimming? Dry feathers! What do you see of birds after an oil spill? Oil soaked birds. Not wet but oil.

They do use the dawn to get the oil off the birds.

This oil slick thing has got me wondering

If there is that much oil and sludge left over from a few tank test runs, how much oil/sludge are we leaving in the lake when we are running or Outboads


..........I'm just saying

Not much...most of the new synthetic oils are biodegradable. Now if you were exclusively boating and trolling in a swimming pool sized lake/pond, I might get concerned about ring around the you-know.
