Is it normal for the base plate on my Merc 800's water pump to be difficult to remove. I can't get it off with my hands and was just wondering if I should try to wedge it off with a flathead screwdriver? I just don't want to bust anything if I can avoid it. Thank you gentlemen.

Re: Base plate on water pump

Don't confuse the base plate with the plastic waterpump base.

When changing the impeller, it's common for the metal base plate to come in the kit. The only reason to remove the plastic base is if the seal is leaking water into the lower unit. If it's that bad you can destroy the base getting it out, as you are gonna be using a whole new waterpump (with base and seals) as oppsed to an "impeller kit".

The metal plate outta pry off the plastic base with some gentle prying.

Hope this helps.

-W

Two flathead screwdrivers, gently work it out. It will take a little work but will come out. Just be careful!

Re: Base plate on water pump

Thank you. Sorry about the confusion on names. Not the base plate, but the base of the water pump. I'm having some work done under there. I'll take it easy getting it off. Thanks again
