Hello,

I'm back, I have a 1997 5.7L TBI V (I think it is a V TBI any way) from what I can see I don't have the Knock Control module on my dist and since it is not there I assume I don't have one since I can not find any place in the manual that says it could be here or there it only has it located on the dist.

So if I dont have one and if I ground the Pur/Wht wire out when I set the timming,RPMs and carb adj. and then remove it and when I restart it should the RPMs change or not and if not do I need to put it in base timming mode at all.

Also in the book it looks like I set the timming to 8btc but on the carb cover it has 10btc which do you think I should use?

The same thing with the plug gap the book has .045 but the carb cover has .035 ?

Thanks

Re: Base Timming mode or not

Many models with T5 did not have knock sensers or modules. Follow the manual, put in base mode for adjustments only.

Need to verify engine, In '97 Merc had numerous 350's, including gen+ vortec head and standard head. A vortec head engine will have 8 intake bolts, and standard will have 12.

Re: Base Timming mode or not

The only engines that had a T-Bolt V distributor but no knock module are the small block fuel injected engines made in 98, 99, amd 00.

All carbureted engines with T-Bolt V have an ignition module and a seperate knock module, and a 97 will have T-Bolt V and require grounding the purple/white wire to set base timing.

Thanks for the info , I will have to go and look to see if it is a gen+ .

In fact that was going to be my next question about the GEN+.

Dave, the '96-97 5.7L 2brl alphas (not gen+) had no knock module, senser, or wiring harness to support it. I believe, but would have to check, the 4.3L V6 and 5.0L had models with no knock module. My point was, many people assume since they have T5 they have the knock module. Not so, and you need to check.

Knock module or no knock module, the procedures are the same. You must set T5 into base timing mode.

Re: Base Timming mode or not

I just went to lunch and did a quick pick at it and I have 12 bolts 6 on each side. so it's not a GEN+

Now I need to look and see if I have the knock module, I know for a fact that there is only one module on the Dist. since I had to pull it off to change the cap ( had a bolt that would not turn ) .

Now what do you think about the fact that when I ground the Pur/Wht wire and set the RPMs to 650 turn it off pull the ground wire and start it back up the RPMs are still at 650 no change at all. I was kind of thinking that it would change may be go up. I may be just thinking to much.

One thing I do know is that the tech on the boat is not working so I do have that to track down and it may be all the same issue I don't know.
