Re: Basic tools for a new home owner

It has proven very useful to me that I happen to have 2 or more of many common tools...several sets of screw drivers, a few hammers, tape measures etc...I end up with tools in my truck, arround the various projects in my house and in my shed. I am not a slob but when you have many projects going at once it is easier to have some of the basics spread arround near by. I think I have a tape measure in each room and in my pickup..the urge to measure stuff hits at odd times.

Don't forget a hack saw and propane torch for sweating pipes.

Re: Basic tools for a new home owner

good list so far... here's my $.02...

skill saw

level

an extension ladder to get to windows, roof/eavestroughs... make it a class 2 if it's one that is 28' or longer. If it's a low roof house, I'd get one of those multi-purpose ladders that you could use in stair wells and such

a tool belt with suspenders (won't spend all his time looking for his hammer or tape measure)

a work bench with peg board back, so tools can be found. Small vice on the corner.

a utility sink for washing paint brushes etc.

saw horses

Medium sized plastic tubs with lids... then write on the sides "electrical" "plumbing / copper" "plumbing ABS" "painting" etc etc. Put the special stuff for those tasks in the boxes. Stack under work bench.

Making a work bench and saw horses are good projects for someone to start on. It ain't finish carpentry, and they'll use 'em for years to come. And make sure the saw horses will end up being able to be stacked one on top of the other.. for storage.

--edit--

forgot... a good extension cord.

in all honesty.....there are no basic tools. If he plans on doing most of the maintainance...it will take most of his life time to get everything.think about all that there is to building a house.all of the above.
