Re: Batteries

"One 12.26, other 12.33 volts. One back up in one hour, other would not accept anymore on my automatic charger."

i just went back and read the post that induced my comment

this really aint worth the effort but 12.26 or 12.33 one didnt come up means at least one of em is still at 12.26 or 12.33 after it had been on the charger.. okay perhaps i am too ready to blame auto chargers cos i have seen just too many that dont fully charge a battery before switching off..

12.36 according to the site boatist quotes if i remember correctly was nearer 3/4 flat than half also.. cant kinda seee how that would come up in an hour either

course we do have this just how u test em stuff.. run the surface charge off do this do that.. i just go on what the battery should read fresh off the charger useing an accurate multimeter to be sure its fully charged.. and yes a fully charged one will read 13.5 volts with the charger just disconnected.. which i assumed (probably wrongly) was when u were checking your voltages..

i have several little battery testers with different coloured little lights (diodes) that come on to tell u the state of charge of a leisure/deep cycle battery.. quarter.. half.. full and so on.. they apply a samll load and every one of em needs well over 13 volts at the battery terminals before the fully charged light comes on.. any idea why..???

but as i said earlier.. forgive me i should never have posted in this thread..

nuff said on a silly potentially (inevitably it seems) over complicated subject.. the only thing that really matters is dont let the buggers go dead flat.. unless u live in alaska of course then it probably pays to take em to bed with u every night to keep the buggers warm..

trog100

Re: Batteries

I think Bondo chart is very close. Basic Chemistry 101 carbon zinc or alkaline cell is 1.5 volts, a lead acid cell is 2.1 volts. 2.1 volts x 6 cells equals 12.6 volts. I wonder if a lot of the misinformation here is from people useing dash volt meters or poor quality meters.

I find most automatic battery chargers do a good Job of charging with out over charging. I like chargers of 10 amps or more so you can complete a charge on a group 27 battery over night to be ready for the next day. Unless your charging in high temperatures (like in a boat in full sun in a black battery box) then 10 amps will be just fine.

Charge voltage should be between 13.5 to 14.4 volts or about 2.4 volts per cell. On sealed cell the higher voltage is fine but open cell at higher temperatures the lower voltage is better. The newer smart chargers will do multi stage charging to charge the battery faster and also equalize and then apply a float charge. Newer auto Alternator regulators change the charge voltage according to temperature.

Biggest killer of batteries is US. We go fishing and discharge our starting battery below 80% and our trolling batteries below 50% and when we get home we are tired so we grab the fish and go in have a beer clean the fish and kick back. We do not think about our batteries until thursday when getting ready for the next trip.

Starting batteries should not be disgharged below 80 percent or trolling batteries below 50 percent and they should be recharged ASAP.

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-35.htm

Re: Batteries

The best meter I have is that stupid key in the dash. Been using it for decades. It starts the damn motor or it don't. The damn multimeter tells me nothing about the battery I don't know if it don't start the damn motor. If it don't start the damn motor I charge the damn battery with the damn charger my old man bought at Sears in 1956, if not sooner (and it does the same as my new "Auto"). I leave the madatory 28 day charge thing to the women. If it don't hold a charge, I buy a new one at Wallyworld for $35 (this will start a new argument at least) and use it until the "key" meter says I should do something else.
Aint it AMAZING how we never had a battery or charging problem until the advent of cheap meters, auto chargers, and experts on the internet. I've been told here so far that my battery is flat no damn good at 12.26, or the other at 12.33, but for some reason (Planet/Moon Alignment?), it starts the damn boat to get me away from said experts! Thank God for that. Ya'all need to relax a touch...life aint science! Now, about that oil question........

Re: Batteries

"Keymeter".... got to add that one to the spellchecker....LOL

Only one problem I see... The ole' "Keymeter" won't start, so ya run out and drop some coin at Wallyworld for a new battery only to find that "Keymeter" still won't start the engine.
