Battery charging oops!

Ok i made a booboo i disconnected the battery while motor was running.... ok smack me a boat is not a car..... anyways should it have kept running or not i ve read conflicting info on this...if not how can i check the charging system with out frying another rectifer????????

sorry the motor is a 71 evinrude 60. if battery is not charging how long should motor run on just battery power?????

your motor doesnt run off the battery...if your rectifier goes bad you can unhook it you just have to keep an eye on the batt charge while you are starting and running accs

im not sure if the newer reg/rec will fit on yours like it does mine but somebody on here nay be able to tell you

Sorry, I have to disagree. That motor has Battery CD ignition (Motorola Amplifier). It will quit if the battery goes dead. Also, depending on whether or not it has the clipper circuit or replacement amplifier, disconnecting the battery while running will almost certainly destroy the rectifier and maybe the amplifier. The book is very specific about dirty or loose connections.

Check to see if the charging system is working by connecting a voltmeter across the battery terminals and see if the voltage increases after the motor runs awhile. It should, if it is working and you don't have a bunch of electrical accessories dragging it down.

ok ive been checkong around and i beleve my motor has had the conversion to an auto style coil cause there is no apmlipher on the motor....

It will still quit if the battery goes dead. The alternator more than likely wasn't changed any, was it?
