Battery Charging questions

I found that my new boat did not come with a dual purpose battery as i thought. So I've installed a Guest 2611A onboard charger (2 bank x 5 amp) and a deep cycle marine battery in addition to the cranking battery.

I'll be using the onboard charger at dockside (where ACV is available) or when the boat's on the trailer at campsite or home.

When I'm just charging overnight after a day of fishing so we can go back out next day, do I need to remove the caps on my batteries?

I realize the alternator charges the cranking battery while running and the battery caps are in place, so will they vent as needed if I leave them on while on the Guest charger?

Want to be sure I've got all my ducks in a row.

Thanks!

Re: Battery Charging questions

With this particular model of charger, do not leave it on for extended periods as a maintainer. Especially as the unit gets older. Some of these had a feature where one battery can become overcharged. The batteries should be fully charged after 24hrs. Unplug it after that.

Where did you read this about this charger? I have the same charger and have not had a problem leaving it on for extended times.

Bruce and DWhite,

I PMed you with the info and source. Please do not post it.

FWIW: I have two these and hadn't had any problems either. One I still use as a single 10amp, which the problem can not occur with. The other I replaced with a Guest Sportsman 10/5 amp charger.
