I have twin 90hp Evinrudes (with 20 amp regulated charging systems)on Glacier Bay Cat. One battery and gas tank for each motor. Completely seperate electrical systems. I installed a third house battery to run lights, live well pump, & accessories.I installed a 50 amp West Marine battery combiner to port engine battery. It does not seem to be able to keep house battery charged. Can I install a second combiner from starboard engine to help in charging the house battery?

Thanks Gents

Re: Battery Combiner for each motor?

The battery combiner from the second charging source can shut down its attempt to charge the house battery when it senses the higher-than-battery voltage coming in from the first combiner’s charging voltage. Normally, two independent smart charging sources on one battery do not always work unless you are combining the outputs of a single dual-bank charger that is designed to sense the combined outputs.

A simple solution would be to install a deep cycle house battery that is big enough to provide the amp hours you will need during a typical boating session then re-charge it using a 120vac charger when you return. In your case it may be as simple as adding a second, identical house battery in parallel and an appropriate battery charger. You can leave the battery combiner on there, it doesn’t hurt anything.

Alternatively, you can toss one of the new AGM deep cycle batteries into your boat for a house battery. They can accept a charging rate of C/1 … capacity-over-1 … that means a 120A/Hr battery can be charged at a rate of 120amps. You would think the battery could be completely recharged in 1-hr but the battery resists the charging voltage as it ‘fills up’. It takes about 1-hr and 15-mins to completely charge a complete flat battery. Depending on your alternator’s output, you may need to install a bigger, beefier alternator to keep up with the battery.

There is a guy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that can help you with what you are trying to do. Call Meridian Marine at (954) 761-3940. Ask for Harrison.

Re: Battery Combiner for each motor?

Thanks Rabbit
All three batteries on the boat are AGM deep cycle. I have an on board three bank battery charger/maintainer which tops off the batteries nicely overnight. If I add a second house battery in parallel, do you think the on board charger will still work? Thanks for the contact in Lauderdale.

JD
