Hello everyone.
I would like to use my deep cycle battery to start my 15hp evinrude and also use it for my electric trolling motor. The evinrude will pull start and run with no battery if i have to. I guess what i'm asking, is the deep cycle battery ok for starting the evinrude? The evinrude is a 1989 2 stroke.

A deep cycle battery starts my 200hp Evinrude w/o a problem. Don't see it being an issue with a 15hp

Re: Battery for both?

Here's my understanding of the starting vs. deep cycle battery:
The deep cycle battery of a given size will be more robust to withstand pounding, than a starting battery.
The starting battery of a given size will be able to deliver more power (at an instant, in other words to start the motor).
But if you upsize the deep cycle battery, it will be able to deliver enough power (energy per time) to start the motor, and still have more energy for running an electric motor, lights, etc. And it will tolerate being discharged to a deeper level. The construction difference is that the starting battery has thinner, more fragile plates, with more surface area. Of course, the tradeoff is in cost and weight.

You won't have any problems at all. I've been doing it for years with a 25hp motor.

Re: Battery for both?

a boat with a 15 and a trolling motor is probably on the small side so not having 2 batteries is a plus. Since anything under 25hp is an easy pull-start the battery for starting is merely a convenience. And unless you have problems it takes very little to start it, esp. once it's warmed up.
so match one battery for its primary function--the trolling motor, if that's what you use a lot, and stick with one

crap, get yourself a 27 series marine deep cycle or deep cycle/starting battery and go fishing. Too much debate on this non-issue.
