I would be asking myself what is NOT working right that makes it had to start? Is it cranking slow? do ya have good compression? is it in time correctly? getting enough fuel? do ya have to crank it alot? etc? address those questions and you should only need one battery unless you just like having the extra insurance of a second batt.

I agree with notsunkyet, I would try and find the problem. What kind of battery are you using? Should be a marine starting battery, not a deep cycle.

Another answer to the original question.

If you wire them in parallel then no it won't "hurt" as you are still delivering 12 volts, just increasing the capacity. (power will last longer)

If you wire them in series, yes as you deliver 24 volts which is likely to fry all sorts of expensive parts.

Two batteries won't hurt.It should only take one to start.I have twins and have them both hooked to one battery.With the second as a back-up.
They start within 3-4 seconds at most.
You starting it right? Using the choke etc?
If there is a problem then go to the basics.Compression/spark/fuel.J
