Hello this is my first forum and my first time owning a boat... I purchased a 1989 Bayliner Capri with a 50hp Force motor.. Heres my issue, I've no knowledge on outboards and motor has issues..... Previous owner hooked battery up backwards .. They said they replaced the stator and motor still wont run.. I was told by a outboard mechanic to replace battery and look for a fuse inside motor cover, well fuse isnt there anymore, straight connection.. Im looking for any info to help a DUMMY that has no knowledge with outboards try and do what I can myself without paying a fortune!!!

Re: Battery was hooked up BACKWARDS..

welcome to iboats.

whats done was done so its time to work out whats wrong. a engine requires fuel/air/spark to run buy a spark tester and see if you have a spark will be the best place to start (you can do it the old fashion way by using a plug in a pair of insulated pliers and touching the threads to the block but if you get zapped thats not my fault)

Re: Battery was hooked up BACKWARDS..

Most of the time when a battery is connected backwards two things usually results: tripped ckt breaker which connected between the solenoid and the rectifier. If nothing happens when you turn the switch to start, this could be the problem. The other thing is the rectifier is blown or shorted which can cause a problem to the stator hence results in no sparks.

You need to take note of the symptoms on why the engine will not run. Test compression on all cylinders. Make sure you have fuel going into the engine but smelling the exhaust during starting. Check make sure you have sparks. If you have compression, fuel and sparks that engine should start and run.

After you check the comp/spark.
Find outboard ignition . com
or cdi electronics.
Both have test procedures for testing the ignition.

Fill out the profile, location, you might be close to someone who can help???

The lanyard isnt even hooked up. I see prong been broken but wires are not worked together. Did a compression test 150 top 140 bottom... unfortunately looking alot more towards cdi..

Electrically speaking I'm at the bottom of the class. That said, doesn't the lanyard/kill switch connect the two prongs when in place? When pulled, break some kind of circuit thus killing the spark?

Ive found a 1988 Blue cdi box for my 50hp force outboard. My motor is 1989 with a blue cdi box also. Is the 88 compatible with my 89 cdi box?

Grant2575 I do think that the cdi module your looking at will most likely work, but you should check the part number and you can cross it to make sure, the cdi modules fit a wide range of motors. Hope that helps.
