Battery Water

I opened the caps on my maintenance-friendly deep cycle battery and you can see the tops of the plates. It's a year old.<br /><br />To what level should I add distilled water?

Just enough to cover the top of the plates.A little more id ok and a little less is no good.Charlie

Fill the cells just until the plates are covered.<br />Cherge the battery. Check level. Adjust as needed. As battery discharges, electrolyte is absorbed by the plates. Charging will release electrolyte, adding to the level of fluid.

Just covering the plates isn’t enough water. Add distilled water only. Fill to a level just below the fill tube. Think of it this way… as much water as you can get into the cell but leave a small air gap so any gases can move freely anywhere above the fluid level. If the fill tube has a slit on the side, add water just to the bottom of the fill tube. The slit is there to allow gasses to move freely.<br /><br />
