Bayliner Boat Question

Guy texted me saying he has like a 1989 20' bayliner center console with a 75 HP Johnson stinger on it. Its a hour away from me and I am on the hunt for a boat around this size and want a CC. Is this a good boat and engine? Is it worth my drive?

The only issue with the boat is one of the hydraulic rams for the tilt of the motor leaks but that's seems replaceable. Other then that it has a bait tank, new control cable, the top edge of the boat I guess was scratched and stuff and some deep chips of wood had been taken out by use and abuse so he took it to a boat place and they smoothed out the wood and re glassed it and painted it. So I am told its ready to go. Guy is military and needs to sell it so is holding it till I look in a few days.

For everything described above, what is a fair price? It comes with a newer escort trailer.

With an an old boat like that, you have to see it in person to really know what its worth. Personally, I wouldn't touch a Bayliner from the mid 80s to low 90s with a 10 foot pole. I owned an 87 Bayliner from nearly new so I know the quality issues first hand.

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

What areas should I look for to be a problem? He seems to have set it up well and says he hasntbhad any issues in the last 4 years. But I know a lot of guys fib but still. I'm looking for a boat in the $3500 or less range. Cuz I got the cash and don't wanna spend really a lot more on a boat. Since I can't use it as much as I'd like while I'm in college. But this summer I'd like to fish a few times a week. This guy is at $3000

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

The Johnson "Stinger" is older than the boat, probably from the 70's.

Boat is likely too heavy for that motor, motor is too small.

Saltwater used?

Where are you located?

condition is everything.

How did this guy get your phone number?

yeah too small of a motor for that but if it is a bayliner didn't those come in a fishing boat around 16'?. Bigger would that be a trophy? I've owned Bayliners and they are ok.

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

only if you put another 75 on it!

Pass.

And for future reference, on older motors, the PTT is worth more than the motor, when it comes to repairs. They are very hard (seldom possible) to fix b/c you break seals, deal with rusted parts, sometimes have to pull the motor. A $1,400 problem.

A 75 on that thing? WOW is about all I can say! I'd be surprised if it can't get up on plane at all, at least without 3 or 4 of your buddies leaning over the front. That boat is EXTREMELY underpowered.

Anyway, you asked fair price. $1000 is probably about it. Depending on condition, that might be far too generous.

And even a lot of 16's are rated for 90's. I think the consensus is to walk away........

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

unless the 20' means overall including trailer...

I had a guy tell me he had one he was getting rid of for a couple hundred bucks he had no clue - told me it was like 30' I get there to look at it and it was a 21' - 30' if you added the trailer, sterndrive, and didn't know how to read a tape measure.

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

found this 17' Bayliner/Trophy with an 85 on it - that would work

a 20' Tropy with a 135 which would work

pretty sure there is some confusion on the actual hull that has the 70 hp on it.

Blue... I would not seriously consider a 20 ft boat with less than 140hp..... some think that is still underpowered... with the proper prop 140hp will push a 20ft boat nicely..... condition, condition, condition......

that's a bay boat hull (or worse, a bow rider hull with a center console in it) and would be a big liability in the ocean where the OP wants to go.

I have a 2002 Trophy 19' Center console with a 150 on it. That 75 is way too small if it is truly a 20' boat. The options on mine were 125, or 150. I would pass on this and keep looking. With the warmer weather you should start to see a lot more boats available to chose from.

agreed i'm but debating HP on a 20' boat and what the boat actually is. I don't believe it is a true 20' Bay with a 75 Rude - that's dam near a kicker.

Really need to see a pic of the boat before we can contribute much more

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

Here it is. My other post didn't post for some reason.... Anyway, took this pic to the local boat place and they said they had never seen a bayliner like this and the one guy that worked there was a bayliner dealer for 15 plus years. They said it looks like something else and the motor on it should move it fine but ill ask the guy about a sea trial once I measure the boat and find out what it is.

Without having the registration in front of him he thinks its a 89 bayliner run about????

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

Lol ok I get the message :p he just texted me saying he apparently had a boat place by me customize the interior and reinforce it so that makes me wonder what's covered up now :p says front deck is now for jigging and rear is for trolling. Whatever that means

I guess the bigger issue I see is with a budget of $3500 while in school and my friends and I want a bigger boat to take out this summer, I think I gotta look for a slightly smaller boat (ive been looking at the 20-23' boats) because for the past few months I haven't seen anything come up that's worth the money they are asking. The boats ive seen in person this week are all falling apart and just junk. I have a homemade flat bottom 16' skiff option that's a really nice boat, or the bayliner above. Just talked to the guy on the phone ( I don't wana bail on him since he adjusted his schedule earlier this week so he could shoe me the boat Saturday) and he says the thing flies in the water and is a really solid boat and has never had a issue with it. He says its 19' and some change and doesn't thing its a factory center console. He thinks the previous owner custom built it and when he got it he had the boat place redo a lot of stuff and now its just a fish slaying machine... IDK, I agree with you guys and see now after reading about 80's bayliners that I should run away from this but what are the chances it is worth a few grand? He offered a sea trial as well. So im not sure if I should be "that" guy and bail on him or just go with it for a few hours Saturday and see how it turns out.
Because its obvious to me this guy moved here with the military, bought the boat for fishing not really knowing what it was, had it worked on and repaired and ready to go and used it the last 4 years and now is moving with the military again. So its a craps shoot. He swears to god the only issue is a leaky hydraulic ram and says he goes all day with that engine on one tank of gas, and says it gets up on plane easy. He says he and his friend arnt exactly light so their combine weight is like 500 lbs. He says they can lift the boat... So that's how light it is they said without the motor gas and batteries in it. Weird

Re: Bayliner Boat Question

bayliners are light, but not that light. The first link you posted is apparently the same boat (never seen it before) and it has a 125 hp.

if you can pick up for $2k go for it, as long as the transom doesn't flex.

Then stay close to shore because it is not a big water boat by any means.
