I don't know why so many people bash bayliners.....my 1990 looks better than most new boats....design wise, and dash wise. It is light years better than my old maxum bowrider.
Buy what you can afford and enjoy it. If it gets you on the water have fun. I am hoping to pick up a late 90's Mariah in a few years, but will never turn my back and stick my nose up in the air on my Capri....like most people here do for some reason.
I do agree that there are certain models of bayliners that are better than others, but you have that in any brand.

If you plan to boat in areas with hard or rocky bottoms you do not want a fiberglass boat.

Honestly, knowing how short the boating season is up there, it could be in really great shape.

Even further, if it has indeed been garage kept winters, you'll know immediately. Open every hatch you can and look around inside for sticks and leaves and stuff like that that rot and turn to dirt...if it looks all pretty underneath everything, and everything feels solid, it could be a nice boat.

I read this forums every day...and it's funny....two ways a thread like this goes:

1. Boat manuf. doesn't matter as much as condition is the general consensus.
2. It's a bayliner, stay away is the general consensus.

Honestly, I'd go look at it, maybe see if you can drive the thing, although I know lakes are a sparse thing around your part...I've never even heard of crooked lake...thought big lake was the only option around for boats of the fiberglass persuasion.

But I would try to talk them down a little bit. ;)

Now, if you can go hit up the Moose's Tooth and watch a movie for me and drink a few beers, and then come back and tell me how that went...I'd appreciate it. :)

Re: bayliner capri bowrider?

My model is avail in a bowrider and cuddy. I gave up on a bow rider as every single one I looked at was rotted due to washover. In buying my bayliner, I find two things really bad. Myself and the boat get no respect because of the fat bayliner name on the side. And it pounds thru the chop very bad. I have now resorted to standing even though it is illegal in <23' boats while at cruise speeds. I just cannot take the pounding.

Other models of thicker and heavier hull construction take it very well. You MUST test drive it. Do not buy it without doing that.

With 1 person you can expect about 45-52 MPH out of that drive. 5-6 people will really cut the speed down.

Re: bayliner capri bowrider?

So I have Bayliner and Chaparral bowriders. It's not a comparison I would make but our Bayliner is 26 years old now and we bought it new. When we buy something we treat it as though it were made of gold whether it be our vehicles, cars or houses. Because of how it was maintained and treated it is really a paradox. An ancient Bayliner that is in fantastic shape. Sure most components are pretty cheap but have all lasted the test of time and use and still have fun with it. My point is there is nothing wrong with Bayliners per se just something wrong with some of the owners. There are exceptions to every rule and I am sure there have been great owners that just got unlucky. I actually like the look of those early 1990's BL's and every now and then you find one that was maintained properly. I can't comment on price but I mistakenly always thought you all had cheap gas up there.

There's only a few refineries up there, so most of the gas is shipped up...it's ridiculously expensive...although not even close to $7. Probably closer to half that right now.

Expect to pay up to $2.00 more a gallon if you drive up to a marina and get your gas while on the water. Supply and demand!!!

That was the point I was trying to get across. There's nothing wrong with a properly maintained Bayliner, shoot I have a 22 year old specimen that I am reviving. The main issue with used Bayliners is usually the lack on maintenance by first time boat owners...Bayliner's new boat target customers.
