Re: bayliner capri bumpy or bouncing ride

i have picked up a smartab. i am waiting for them to arrive. i hope installation will be simple. i got them for 114.oo . is it a good deal or bad deal?

Thats a good deal. you are gonna need some 3m marine sealant (3200 or 4200 if i remember) though. Some drilling, sealing, and running screws is involved. make sure. really sure.....you seal every part of them. I had to take mine off and reseal them because i didnt do it right the first time. It will definitely help, its not a waste of money as someone mentioned above.

The tabs will only help in getting faster on the plane and be able to plane at lower speed. They will not eliminate the hard hits in chop at faster speed. This is not a Bayliner thing, just the design of the hull in a smaller boat. The lighter the hull the more unstable it becomes with a deep V configuration, hence the modified part where the stern flattens out to provide more stability at rest. Most manufacturers use this design in their smaller and lighter hulls. In strong wind chop trimming the bow all the way down will help some (tabs will do that also) but this would not be recommended in bigger waves. Again, only help some so don't expect miracles. Smartest thing is to adjust the speed in accordance with the conditions. You will never ride like heavier deep V boats but that does not mean the boat is flowed, just enjoy what you have.

The two best comments in my opinion:

1) Boat is light, not much to do. Moving weight up and trimming the bow down (trim in) will help.
2) Smart tabs help a lot of things and will help some for this despite some opinions. They will keep the bow from coming off the waves so high and will smooth things out to a certain extent.

Other than that, there is only so much you can do. Depending on the frequency of the chop you can adjust your speed up some to sort of carry through the waves, but the hits you get will be harder (Your boat is not going to crack though. At least not the hull, lots of wood parts on a bayliner of that era to crack/loosen but not typically dangerous). Or slow down, trim in and go through the waves. I find 20mph for me is smooth in just about anything, when 25-27 is beating me up. So I'll take a little longer and enjoy not spilling my beer!

Just drive your boat more and get used to it. If you think your bayliner is bad for this, be glad you never drove the 15' glastrong gt-150 I had. Quick and light little shallow v boat but any amount of wind and I was getting thrown around by the waves. When I first bought the boat I found it somewhat alarming. Get used to it a bit and it's no big deal, just the nature of the beast.

You are very right about the GT 150. It was a poorly designed hull. I owned a CVX Carlson 16 and could not believe the difference the first time I drove one.
