1993 OMC Cobra 4.3

I was replacing some of the seals on the lower part of the drive - shaft seals and the large o-ring that wraps around the back of the bearing carrier.

Here's my problem...
The bearing carrier is held in by four screws. I either overtightened two of the screws or didnt tap the carrier in far enough...either way, two of the screws that hold the bearing carrier in are either cross threaded or stripped. Any ideas on how to get those out?

Thought about drilling them out, but there is limited space to work in with the carrier stuck in there...I've tried everything else I can think of...there set back into the drive about 6 - 7 inches...

Re: Bearing Carrier problem

Are you sure this is a 1993 ? I took a quick look at the partsbook, and the carrier is held in with two tabs, held in by one bolt on each.

DHP

ps: I'm talking about about the propshaft bearing carrier.

Re: Bearing Carrier problem

Sounds like the 4 bolt setup on my older Stringer Drive. Weird. I thought the Cobra only used 2 too.

Re: Bearing Carrier problem

The drive was rebuilt before I bought it, so I'm not sure of the exact year of the drive. I just pulled the 1989 diagram from doug russell...that is similiar to mine. It uses the four bolt pattern and the bearing carrier "plate" is held in by the two snap rings....

That's similar to my Stringer.
You have to get those screw/bolts out somehow. That snap ring has to come off so you can get the backing plate off. you'll have to replace it.

Re: Bearing Carrier problem

Forgot, when you reinstall the carrier, next time go to the hardware and get 4 all threads about 12" long. Thread into the plate a cuople of turns. Use as a guide to align the carrier going in. You should be able to push it in with your fingers. If not, gentle taps with a rubber mallet.

The screws will draw it true. DON'T over tighten. I also used a small amount of Permatex #2 at the screw heads to help prevent leakage.

Thanks KaGee, I've already bought a new backing plate and new screws...Just hope its not too difficult to get those two out. Trust me...I wont overtighten this time. Thanks again

Unscrew the 'good' screws. The other 2 should come out with the bearing carrier.

DHP

Re: Bearing Carrier problem

Just an update to my dilema in case anyone else ever finds themselves with a similiar problem.

Basically, put a puller on the end of the carrier to put pressure on the two stripped screws. Slowly unscrewed each one (a little at a time) until they came loose. Put the new backing plate, seals and screws in...good as new. Held pressure at 25 psi...

Thanks for everyones help.

OMG! 25 psi is way too high! Don't do that again or you will be replacing the seals!

Glad to hear you got it fixed!
