hi? I need serious help. I dont know what going on with my boat trailer axel. i have a 95 escort trailer for boat. It doesn't have brakes and it a single wheel trailer. My bearing completely damage and mashed when i removed it. i bought new hub and new bearing and everything new except axel. my problem is d bearing will start to go in or glide in and stop. I tried the bearing on d other side of the trailer same thing like the new bearing. Start going in and stop. what could be my problem. before puting d new bearing i cleaned the axel with a scotch cloth to clean and smooth. am having this problem on the left side.

Pictures would help, but it sounds like there's still some metal from the old bearing welded on the spindle.

When you get it filed enough so the bearing goes in, it'll probably be a bit loose. Use some loctite green sleeve retainer on it. If it's the inside bearing, plan on using much heat to get it off next time. If it's the outside bearing, start saving for a new axle next time.

Might be worthwhile to just go for the new axle now.

hope it helps

Ok, gotcha....

Yer gonna have to get more aggressive, or replace the axle..

A flat file, 'n patience should be able to retrue the quill enough to get the bearing on...
Then clean it up with varying grits of emery cloth...

You can test fit the bearing, 'n see where it's hi, or low with the quill...
lay-out dye, or paint might make seein' the areas needing filing easier...

Got any Pictures,..??

Use a flat file, but don't take too much off. Files only work on the push, so don't put pressure on it on the reverse stroke. You'll ruin the file. Also, don't file on a single plane. You don't want a bunch of flats, you want it round. File a bit and then test.

Put paint or marker on the axle and slide the bearing on, it will scratch where it is making contact and you will know where to sand it down, repeat until it fits.

And, don't get the new bearing in too tight, nothing kills a bearing faster than having the nut too tight, it should spin freely and have just a touch of play.

Take a picture and post it. The last time this came up it turned out that the guy still had the inner part of the old bearing on the axle.

Good call! I've actually seen this come into my shop on a flat bed. Its hard not to laugh at them missing such an obvious problem. Its always good to be kind and walk into the back room before really letting out a guffaw or several. :D
