How much easier is it to use a bearing packer than the old palm full of grease??

Re: bearing packer

It depends if you are doing large bearings a good air bearing packer works great. If you are thinking about a $10 jobby its a wast of time and money. Its also faster to do it by hand on small bearings.

Re: bearing packer

A good bearing packer will last a lifetime. I've had mine forever.

ANY size bearing that fits is done faster than hand.

Don't use it no where near as much as 30 years ago but after doing 2 or 3 sets a day, back then, you find a much easier way... Average time to pack a wheel bearing, 5 seconds and no where near the mess.
Like anything else, you have to justify the purchase.

I've always just packed bearings by hand, only takes a few minutes for most bearings.

Same here. It works, and is free. I guess it would be nice to have a packer if I were packing daily, but to pack once a year, the hand method works, for me anyway.

I use the tool. I also put a dab in my palm just to make sure the bearing is full. The tool is cheap and works like a charm.

I searched ebay and found a "vintage" bearing packer. It's all metal and works great.

Cost was under $10 shipped :D

Good deal! I put $10 in the bank today :p
I have a funny feeling a few people here have never used a bearing packer. Just like anything, you really don't know what your missing unless you try it. I have lots of tools that I probably don't REALLY need but make life a little easier. This is one of them.

I'm sure it does BUT I can pack my bearings in very short time, with no additional cost, why throw money away(IMO) when what I do works fine??? I not only try and make as much money as I can, I treat each dollar I have as a potential seed for a money tree.

I could have spent $40K on a newer boat, but I spent 10% on an older boat that provides me with just as much joy. The money I saved there will buy me a rowhome in Baltimore that will provide me income until I retire, then when I sell it it will be worth MUCH more.

Just one example. I used to buy things on a whim, or because it was "easier" but all of that little stuff ads up.

By the way, I have tried a packer and it is less messier but I really don't see that much time savings. Hey, but whatever floats your boat. ;)

Re: bearing packer

Well I think I will invest in a fairly decent one as I have two diffs, spindle bearings (rockwell and an eaton) that need maintenance.
And to tell the truth, I am the messiest palm bearing packer, grease goes everywhere but were it is supposed to. :D

Re: bearing packer

I have TWO bearing packers... One for the right side bearings and one for Left side bearings... Both are 48 years old and work just great!!!

The Double as beer holders, Fishing rod holders, steering wheel holders... :)

I pack bearings about 2 times a year on two boat trailers and my cars...

Its fun and greasy... but hey... You have to make your own sunshine sometimes... :D

Re: bearing packer

only time I've used a beaaring packer was in the army. I will admit though everytime I do bearings at the house I tell myself I gotta get one of those packers. It's not the time or the trouble, but it sure is nice to be done packing a bearing and not have to scrape all the excess off your hands and what not.
$10? no question there, that puppy would be at the house. yeah you could save that ten spot but really if you only bought absolute necessities what fun would life be?

Oh I buy much more than just necessities lol, just ask my pole barn full of toys.
I just won't throw $10 at something I don't need because my damn hand works fine :D

I'm not telling anyone what to spend their money on, some would say my 10K lb 2 post lift is a waste, or my big compressor is a waste. Do what you want!

Re: bearing packer

So RBH, did you buy the tool or put money into seeds for a money tree for your retirement? :)

Re: bearing packer

To be honest thats one job I hate:(. But I usually do it once or twice a year to show students how its done the old fashion way and how "I" want it done:). Then make them do it for the rest of the year:redface:. Only after they have done it few times do I show them how to do it with a packer. But I really like to see that grease come out in the hand that way I know it is right. Packers seem to waste a lot of grease but thats just my thought. Spend the money and try it if you dont like it you can always go back to the hand method:D. Sorry that did't sound very nice did it:rolleyes:.
