Took the top cover off the outdrive to look at the gears.......
Gears and bearing looked good, what do you think about this?

Re: Bearing Race

I'm no expert Tony, but that looks pretty well pitted up to me. I wouldn't chance it.

Re: Bearing Race

Replace it. They are Timken 09067 and 09196. Go to any bearing shop and ask for those and you'll get them for less than half what Merc are asking.

Re: Bearing Race

You need to remove the front cover and pull the main bearing pack and drive gear out (special tool required), then just lift the driven gear and it's associated bearings out (they come all as one). Then press the old bearing off the top of the shaft and press the new one on. For the outer race in the top cover, use a 2 or 3 jaw puller with the jaws setup facing out. Then just press the new outer race in... All up, about 30-40 minutes.

Re: Bearing Race

Don't have any special tools......
Probably been that way for a while.........
Think I'm gonna run It for a bit.......

Not a good idea. If the bearing fails completely it will take out the entire top box, and likely put metal shavings in the bottom one too... For such little cost and time you are gambling a new drive...

Good luck.

Re: Bearing Race

Can I just replace the race?
Do the upper gears need to be re-shimmed?

I put a light coat of grease on the race before I reinstalled the top cover.

No, the rollers that are in the other part of the bearing will have the same sorts of pits on them, and will also fail just as quickly.

Bearings and gears are manufactured to tolerances exceeding 1/10 of a thou. Aluminium casings can't be cast or machined that accurately, hence the need for shims. So, if only the bearing is changed (as here), no need to re-shim.

Not going to help.... Replace the bearing, all of it.

that's exactly where i was at when i needed to do mine.
have ya got a relationship with your local dealer? I (think) do.
I took him the upper with the vertical shaft ready to remove. double brg. set and input shaft were removed. all i wanted from the dealer was to R&R the brg. with their press, which they didn't have the right tool on hand either and had to get one. + R&R the race in the top cap and confirm rolloing torque of the vertical shaft as i didn't have an inch lb torque wrench (or a driver for the torque wrench) either. i think they did this for me for about $80 round abouts (brg included). a couple years ago. they even let me play with their inch lb torque wrench for checking the vertcal shaft resistance. which if i remember right was somewhere around 5-10 inch lbs. was fun and i got what i needed accomplished.
