Beaver attacks lil boy

I realize the little boy was trying to "pet" the beaver but I'm wondering why it was so far away from water. I looked Durand Ok. up on Google earth and didn't see any large bodies of water nearby. Maybe a creek or small river??

I hope the little boy will be OK.

for the kid to get that close, it had to be someones, illegal pet, that had gotten loose.

With a set of chompers strong enough to chew down a tree I expect he could have bit that young boy's leg right off if he'd wanted to. I didn't know beavers ran 60 lbs.! That boy's real lucky to have his leg, hope he does O.K.!

Yep, beavers are more likely to live in creeks and small rivers, than in large bodies of water. They have a natural instinct to try to stop the flow of water. Something about the sound of it causes them to try to stop it.

BTW, I went to Beaver Local High School in Lisbon, Ohio. Home of the Fighting Beavers!

60lbs is awfully big, I didn't think they were quite that big. It's possible it was a "pet", and overfed. But what an odd pet to have, the largest rodent in North America!

While a pest in urban settings due their damming up creeks and culverts. They are a necessary part of nature, the dammed up water is the main water source for animals during summer drought time, and at times a good fishing area around here.

"Beavers continue to grow throughout life. Adult specimens weighing over 25 kg (55 lb) are not uncommon. Females are as large as or larger than males of the same age, which is uncommon among mammals. Beavers live up to 24 years of age in the wild."

So I guess a 60 pounder living near humans (and their garbage) is not hard to believe at all.

60lbs is nothing. We've shot and killed 80+lb beaver at our camp. We even got one that was the size of a medium sized dog and it took me and my father to lift 2 feet into a wagon to haul off. We estimate it weighed close to 100lbs. The beaver was almost 2 feet wide in the middle. It was a monster.

Sorry for the beaver. People need to show their kids to not pet animals that dont belong to the family and ask before petting any animals. The girlfriend and her daughter are very bad about that. I keep telling them to stop that.
In a side note an animal lover friend of mine found a pet kitty. She tried to do what she has done may times, try to rescue the kitty to take it to the shelter. She has been doing that for years as far as I know and never had a problem until this time. The kitty got scare and bit her as she was not wearing any gloves. So the kitty that she was trying to save had to be killed because she did not use any protection... She was lucky the test for rabies came negative...
Moral of the stories... If it has teeth, expect them to use it...

Yep, one of our rally cries was that we had Beaver Fever. And we said it with no hint of irony!

(I actually had a shirt made with beavers on the front and that saying on the back. I wore it at a local Wal-Mart, and nobody said anything!)

WE have beavers in the marsh behind my house, its not very big or deep, blue heron , turtles and frogs and the like, porcupines are the most dangerous to the dogs,
