beeping when I turn on the key

I just bought a 1994 17' Nitro with a 1995 Mercury 115 hp outboard s/n 0G142817. Today, the first time out, it was stuttering at trolling speed. (has old gas in it from sitting from prev. owner) revved up the motor for a second to blow it out and started getting the beeping. Figure that is for overheating but the water is running good, and is not hot. Let it sit several hours, turn on the key, and still get the beep. Is this a loose wire? Should I disconnect this and put a gauge in? Where is the most likely place to look for a loose wire? Any help is appreciated, this is the only boat I ever owned that shows a promise to run.

Re: beeping when I turn on the key

if this is a steady tone its the overheat. if you get this with the key on and engine off check for shorts on the tan wire. if its a beep beep beep then your oil level is low or the oil level float is bad or the module failed. if the oil tank is full, dissconnect the blue wires just under the tank. if that cures it odds are the float is sunk or stuck. if it does not odds are the warning module failed. was common. about now a service manual would do you a world of good. the factory merc manual has a nice section on trouble shooting.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Re: beeping when I turn on the key

Thanks, it is a beep beep beep with the key on and the engine off. Tomorrow I will head for the Merc dealer and get a manual.
