bell peppers question

the tomato thread seemed like a success....any bell pepper growers?....

bell peppers blossomed and a few peppers have already sprouted. (first time gardener, parden my butchering any lingo)

last night a bunch of the buds turned brown and some of them dropped off the plant. between 2 plants i'd say a dozen have died. 1 plant is worse than the other, has less fruit, and is more yellow in color. now the other plant is looking worse.

to make matters worse, jalapenos and serranos are starting to look the same. they haven't dropped any fruit yet though.

i haven't seen any bugs, the rest of the garden is nice and green. we haven't sprayed anything but water on it so far. going to spray a water and soap mixture for the caterpillars as soon as i get a sprayer.

any ideas what's happening to the peppers?? what can i do?

thanks

It's hard to tell. Do you have any pictures? By the the sounds of it, it could be blossom end rot.

If you have hot peppers and sweet peppers growing together don't be surprised if all your peppers are hot when you eat them.

Do a web search for pepper weevil and look for clues on your plants. Could be the culprit.

Cut one of the damaged stalks, then slice it open lengthwise to see if there are any critters in there. If yes, pull all the plants... they're done for.

under or over watering. watering during the heat of the day. i like to water mine lightly just at dusk, then soak them pretty well, in early morning, before the sun gets hot. try to keep water off plants, water the base.

Over watering will turn the leaves yellow.

Are you growing anything else? If so, how is everything else doing?

You say you are a first-time gardener. How did you prep your planting beds?
As a 1st and 2nd timer I wasted two growing years in lousy soil before I had a soil test done and found out soil was completely sterile.
Compost, manure, fertiliser and some peat moss and even I can now get stuff to grow. ;)

i'm doing raised beds. i was warned about the soil where i live so i didn't even try in the ground. the gardening center had some soil they mix up. i had all of the cedar posts laying around, the dry-stack stones too.

construction phase....

we've got a couple types of tomatoes, squash, cucumber, jalapeno, bell pep's, some herbs, tomatillo, serrano peppers, garlic, chard, maybe another 1 or 2.

most things are doing great. we've already been able to eat some jalapeno's, herbs, squash, chard, spinach. it's all more delicious than i had hoped.

the bugs haven't been too bad yet but the peppers are under assault.

the mrs is stopping for some sort of Leem Oil mixture. it's recommended by a co-worker of hers that gardens. i did some reading on it, sounds pretty cool. all natural...this is austin after all.

i don't think i've been over-watering. we've been in the 90's for a while now. they grew like weeds when we had rain for a week a little while ago.

thanks for all the pointers. i may start another thread for bugs. i've got a pair of pissed off half flies/half bees that are very territorial. they sound like a swarm when the 2 of them are flying.

here's one of them (buzzzz)...

Re: bell peppers question

My wife says put some Epsom salt around the plants for the yellowing of the leaves. Fertilize every two weeks and if the the flowers are falling off it means that those flowers were not pollinated. What you need to do is take a small paint brush and pollinate them yourself. Just go from one flower to another like a bee would and brush the flower gently.

And even if my wife is wrong shes right in my house.:D
