I have looked at quite a few exploded views of my 1973 mercruiser lower unit. I have been on iboats, west marine, and overtons sites looking for the bellhousing to transom seal. No one seems to list it. Any ideas?? Local marina said its no longer available, they suggest 3m marine sealant instead-- kinda scary idea.

Hey fishrdan- yes, its # 44 in your diagram. I have the same diagram, I have taken it with me to mercruiser dealers, they say its no longer available- My old one was the original, it was a thin rubber gasket approx 1"+/- wide, almost the same thickness and feel of a bicycle innertube. I am certain its not cork material. I even called Iboats, they cant find it anywhere. Everyone keeps trying to sell me the outdrive to bell housing/gimbal housing instead. I am ready to reinstall my power in my boat- just need that darn gasket-lol. I thought the transom replacement was gonna be the hardest part, boy was I wrong- this gasket has me beat-lol.

That seal hasn't been available since the 70's....

As the man said.... Use 3M sealant.... Works well...

Put it on and install the housing to the transom... Bolt it up, but not all the way. Give it 24 hours and tighten the bolts... Job done.

Assuming you have a Mercruiser 1 drive, the Mercruiser OEM number is 65533A1, costs about 10 bucks.

Ayuh,... Achris just posted a Work-around for that NLA part...
That'll be awhole lot easier than cuttin' your own outa rubber gasket material...

A tube of 3M 5200 is all you need. I have seen the gasket squeeze out of place and cause MAJOR leaks, I never use them. 'nutcase

That's the later one Don. He's after the early one... The flat rubber sheet. Part number was 27-45832, been NLA for years. But I just checked up... Supersedes to 27-70974 and still available. WOW...

Hey, 170freedom, try this number, 27-70974.

Re: bellhousing to transom seal needed

Thanks to everyone for all the help, I finally found one down here at Posner Marina- HOWEVER, I was told that the reason mercruiser changed from the flat tire tube style to the newer round rubber seal, was because they are known for slipping out of place. So, I went with the 3M 5200 fast set. Awesome fit!!! I doubt this will ever leak again. Once again, thanks for all the responses- I LOVE my STARCRAFT!!! The fourwinns is gonna be sittin on the trailer for awhile. LOL:p

That was probably a whole lot easier than using the cork gasket. When I used the cork gasket it slipped on me while torquing it down, and I waited a day before torquing. I ended up using bellows adhesive to hold it in place on the transom assy so it wouldn't slip, and got it torqued without the gasket moving.
