Bellows adhesive and exhaust bellows question

Hello again,

I wanted to clarify that bellows adhesive is NOT required for the exhaust bellows even though the Merc manual states to use it. I don't believe that mine were glued down when I removed them.

Also, the manual states to apply the adhesive and wait 10 minutes prior to joining parts together. The adhesive instructions state to wait until the glue is "tacky". When I glued my u-joint bellows I pretty much joined the parts together almost immediately because to me it appeared that the adhesive was drying very quickly and losing its "tackiness". Did I jump the gun and will need to re-glue or will it be ok? The clamp is nice and tight.

And finally, why not glue the u-joint bellows inside the bellhousing instead of just using the retainer ring?

It seems to me to be almost impossible to use adhesive on the exhaust bellows when connecting to the bellhousing with the expander.

The adhesive needs to setup. Even when it feels like it is dry it will stick. The exhaust bellows are not critical but I would use adhesive on them.

So if I did not leave the adhesive long enough (probably) but I did use it on both pieces being joined will it still work?

We never use adhesive on the exhaust bellow, it's a little hit and miss if they stay on. All we do is clean and get rid of any flacking paint, spray Mercury power tune into the bellow slide it on the the transom leave it ten mins the clamp. And do the same using the spreaders and job done!!

I would never use an exhaust bellows. The boot is 100 times easier. The brown merc goober needs to setup in open air before you cram it in the bellhousing.

doubt it. Just takes a lot longer to properly set but it will.

Thanks. I did not re-glue anything, but I still have not had a chance to test the boat out in the water. So the adhesive will have almost 2 weeks to cure. I did end up gluing the exhaust bellows on both ends though.

run the drive up and down 5 or 6 times and turn it a bunch. If it doesn't pop off on land put the boat in water leaving the trailer right there then jump on the boat and look for water intrusion.
