Changed all bellows, shift cable, shift shaft bushings and seals, water intake hose and lube monitor fittings and hose on Alpha 1 gen2. After one day in water the exhaust bellows popped off the gimbal housing. I followed the manual that seems to indicate application of the adhesive to the rubber mating surface of the bellows and wait until no longer tacky. The bellows adhesive package says to apply to both surfaces and let dry until tacky. Which is right? Could this be the reason for the failure?

I never had much luck keeping the exhaust bellows on no matter how you install it. Good news is that no damage occurs when it comes off. I have since gone with an exhaust tube.

It is contact cement, so it needs to be pretty dry before using it. I suspect that it was not dry enough when you put it together and there was enough solvent left so that it slid apart under pressure. it is kind of a fine line, too dry and you may not be able to slide it on and too wet it might come apart. Good luck.

I have been wondering if I should even use it. I have noticed when shopping for transom seal kits, that some kits come with glue and some don't. But it seems like none of the kits for my (1998 alpha one gen 2) come with glue. I have been wondering if that indicates that I don't need glue?

Skip the adhesive on the exhaust bellows only. Spray a little power tune on the rubber tube, use a bellows tool to install. Let the power tune dry/disapate then snug down the clamps . The use of an adhesive aids in the exhaust bellows coming off. After I started using this procedure I haven't had one come off, prior to doing it this way I struggled keeping one on..
