Belts on 89 OMC 4.3

I have a 89 Sunbird eurosport with a 4.3L OMC/Cobra. I replaced the belts when I bought this with the same size that was on it. My problem is I think the belts that where on it are to narrow. They sit way down in the pulley grooves and wear excessively. Does anyone know where I can find a cross-ref for belts using OMC #'s. Or better yet, know which belts I need (I have power steering also, so I need both belts) I have tried NAPA and about every belt manufacturer website I can find. My original OMC parts list doesn't give belt sizes, just OMC #'s.

If the pulleys are all rusty, that is why the belts are too narrow. The rust acts like sand papeer and wears down the belts in no time.<br />If they are real rusy, replace them and keep them dry. <br />You may also be able to take them off sand, wire brush, sand blast or what ever to make them smooth and repaint with a quality paint. RustOlem works great. Allow to dry for a day or so and but the new belts on. You will be amazed at how long the belts will last.

Thanks Don S. I just realized I had not replied to this post yet. I did find out that the belts were to narrow and the pulleys were also rusted some too. I did as you said and wirebrushed and repainted them. I replaced the belts with the correct size (found it on the GATES x-ref) and everything is lovely! THANKS AGAIN!!
