The only thing about just replacing the pinion gear only is not knowing how long it will last.

Yea, that's basicallly what he said, it might last 10 hours or if I'm really lucky it might last 10 years. I mostly use the boat for long trips, meaning we might go 20-50 miles away from the ramp, and next month (august 10th) we are leaving for a week in Maine and staying on a lake. So if the lower unit took a crap their it would basically ruin my trip. So I don't mind spending a little more (or a lot more) to have a little peice of mind. If I was only using it locally I would probably say the heck with it and put the pinion gear in.

The damage on the pinion indicates to me that you are running an SST prop??
If so, quite normal after your grounding.

Nope, an old beat up alluminum was on it when I hit the rock. When I hit the rock it bent one fin a little, but it didn't detroy it.
