Bent Skeg

I have a 98 50 horse Johnson with a bent skeg. I was wondering if it would be possible to heat it up and bend it back straight without breaking it.

If it not bent too much, I would just leave it. The skeg's job is really only there to protect your prop. As long as it is still doing that, think about leaving it.

Find a prop shop with a good reputation; those fellows are set up to fix a bent skeg properly. Ask your local boat dealer for a referral.

A bent skeg will cause the boat to pull one way or the other. It can also send vibrations through the steering wheel. Best idea is to have a reputible prop shop repair it. If its not too bent you may be able to get a replacement from Overtons.com . They sell a composite replacement skeg that goes over the damages skeg. I put one on my '83 50hp two years ago and haven't looked back.

It pulls to the right real bad, you can't let go of the wheel for a second. I guess I will locate a good prop shop and get her straight.

If its bent too bad you can cut the bent part off and buy a skeg guard like others have stated. You can install that part yourself. Just make sure you leave enough skeg left to bolt the new part on. If it's twisted/bent then you might have to do that, if its just bent sideways then probably getting it straightened out is your best best.
