Re: Bentley Company Status

Please help. Our dealer/service manufacturer refused to honor warranty on many items, including running lights, and radio. They claim the radio got water in it . The running lights only worked on half the boats within the first time we tried them but we told them we do not use the boat at night so would wait until we put it in for the servicing under warranty. We also notified them of the radio speakers going out one by one within the 1st 3 months. When the radio stoped working, the mechanic at hte high and dry storage took a look at it and said it was a manufacturer flaw and that the warranty would likely cover the replacement. We told the dealer that we would also wait until we took it in for the servicing. By, the way, within the first month, the motor failed to start many times while we were out in the gulf. Each time we were charged for transport to the dealer, each time they said it was not covered for some reason, and we finally got mercury motors involved and they demanded the dealer take responsibility for fixing the motor so it would run, stop, and start. After that, we had no problems with the motor. we took the boat in, they said water in the radio was our fault and not covered. We had already had our mechanic at the marina check it out when it first occurred and he said it was a manufacturing flaw- he does remember there was no evidence of water in the radio and also said the radios are made to be water proof. He said it was coved under our warrantly. SO we waited and provided the dealer with a list of the items that were in need of fixing, including a seat that had ripped at the stitching. The dealer said the seat was cut with a fishing knife - a knife that we did not even own - they said the raio was filled with water, so refused to honro that, they said the running lights were due to salt water corrosion, but we reminded them they did not work on the left half of the boat from the very beginning- so they reused to honor that. nor Then, they replace the water pump when servicing the motor and did not assemble and calibrate the gears properly. So my senior citizen spouse who is diabetic and myself were stranded when the engine pooped out of gear while out on the gulf the first day after having the boat returned by the dealer. The dealer will pick up the boat tomorrow to "see" if it was their mistake or if by driving our boat in a calm river and clam seas actually is not the proper use for the boat. Are they right or are they taking us for a ride.or are the radios not water proof? Are running lights only necessary on heal the boat. The marina high and dry storage wash the boat before putting it away and we have to motor down 6 miles of a freshwater river once we leave the gulf, so is salt water corrosion a good excuse? And as we are expecting to deny culpability in the engine/gear failure, after 3 marine mechanics and 3 coast guard officials independently diagnosed the problem with the motor without even being told the water pump was replace, are they wrong? I was already told by the dealer the water pump did not cause it and I had to re-explain that putting the bottom of the engine back on After replacing the water pump would cause it. Please let me know if this is normal ways of operating, the boat is less than 1 year old. We expect to replace and fix things, we have owned boats in the past. But we have never felt so cheated and lied to. Any suggestions. Again they refuse to honor any warranties. Obviously w will no longer deal with them after this, but we have the feeling they are going to tell us we did something to the motor by actually using it on the water. Please help with stroies or suggestions

Your dealer does not want your return business. I can't help with the seat but you have a manufacturer warranty on the radio. Usually 1 year so send it back to the manufacturer. Your lights will have similar warranties. As far as the motor. Find a new dealer!!! Do not let them touch your boat again. Any authorized Merc dealer can perform maintenance under warranty.

I would also contact the BBB and report your current dealer.

coco4 this dealer is a thief, he is robbing you every time he sees you and I would not go on his property again if I were you. Get whoever at Mercury helped you before to recommend a different dealer for motor service, and warranty issues. See if the guys where you store your boat will help you get the radio and light issues straightened out, it shouldn't cost too much and you won't have to deal with guys who don't want to help you. By all means call the BBB and tell them your entire story.

Re: Bentley Company Status

New to this forum and having problems with Bentley. I found this yesterday on www.mexicoledger.com dated May 27,2009.

"This is just one more piece of the puzzle," Thompson said. The curators, he said, are expected to meet in June to approve the agreement. Members thanked Rep. Steve Hobbs, who was present at Tuesday's meeting, for his part in helping to secure the funding needed for the construction of the research site.
The final business of the meeting addressed an agreement with Encore Boat Builders, LLC to lease property at 2501 Christopher Drive ? formerly Bentley Industries.
The city of Mexico and Bentley Industries entered into a lease agreement dated April 14, 2005, with the issuance of the city's Industrial Development Revenue Bond. In January 2009, Bentley turned the operation over to Mercury Marine ? which defaulted and had its lease terminated by the city. Mercury Marine was a division of Brunswick Corporation and a secured creditor of Bentley.
Encore Boat Builders reportedly completed the purchase of the inventory, equipment, fixtures and leasehold improvement from Mercury Marine. Its purpose Tuesday was to ask the board to allow the new business to lease the Christopher Drive location on terms and conditions similar to those leased to Bentley. And the council agreed.
Encore made a payment on May 12 in the amount of $9,439. The term of the lease became effective May 22 and will end on May 4, 2014. The first installment of rent under the lease agreement will be due on June 4, and on a monthly basis thereafter. The company also agrees to deliver to the city a promissory note in the amount of $84,303 as payment for the right to assume occupancy of the premises. The terms of the note require payment over three years with interest.
"Allowing Encore Boat Builders to lease the property at the same terms and conditions as Bentley Industries benefits the city by allowing the debt (of back rent and other expenses) to be paid by a company that has relocated to Mexico and will create jobs for the community," Thompson told the council. The president of Encore Boat Builders ? Steve Deese, who also owned Bentley ? addressed the council as well, to share the outlook of his new company.
"It's good to be back. We're looking forward to rebuilding the third largest boat manufacturing company in the U.S., and hope it helps change the economy," Deese said. "We've purchased all the assets from Mercury and are ready to start production.
"The boating industry is poor now, but we're still filling orders for lots of products. Our first delivery out of the Mexico plant is ready to go."
Deese said Encore plans to start with a dozen employees and eventually rehire its original workers who want their jobs back. He said the company has moved its Boat Show dealer meeting to October to give Encore a chance to rejuvenate, and unveil its newest boat line ? the Bentley Encore.
"We spent last week cleaning the warehouse and are at full production today," Deese told The Ledger, following Tuesday's meeting. "We are excited to come back. We had an exceptionally good relationship before, and feel it?s a good location to do our business."
Following adjournment, the council moved into executive session to discuss real estate matters.

Not sure if it really matters anymore but..... I live here in Columbia SC. I'm not 100% sure about the Lexington plant but I understand it's been closed for many months now.

Their other main plant in Columbia has definitley been closed a while. This past weekend (Saturday) there was a public auction at the Columbia plant. Everything was sold, and I mean everything. No pontoons, were there but they did have probably 50 or so aluminum boats (all duracraft brand which is appartently what the plant had been producing up to it's shutdown) in partial stages of completion from just raw aluminum hulls that had not even had the welding finished to near complete hulls just needing a motor. Funny thing was the prior owner Steve was there as well as Mercury reps. Steve bought probably 95% of it back as the winning bidder including the majority of the heavy factory floor equipment like massive press breaks, 30 foot x 8 foot CNC plasma cutters, literally tons of parts like aluminum extrusions, guage clusters, wiring harnessess, etc, etc.

It was a long auction that ran from early morning until after 7pm. I did end up with a few pallets of stuff myself as did many other bidders there but as I said, the prior owner actually bid on and won most of it himself.

This is the Auction company with details on the public auction....

Something legal came up in the days just before the sale that prevented them from auctioning anything with any Glassmaster branding so there were about 15 fiberglass boats that were not sold.

Re: Bentley Company Status

People keep saying they are coming back but everything I have heard for a long time says they are done.

Very smart of the previous owner to buy himself back for pennies on the dollar, get out of debt and set your self up to take another swing.

I really don't think now id the time to start a new company though, the marine market is still all but shut down buisness wise.

I wonder why there were Merc guys there.

Re: Bentley Company Status

The auto companies would love some of you guys. Buy a car and if it fails just start taking the parts off and send them to the supplier. wow!
I would not buy a new boat without a company standing behind it, period!
I don't know what your paying for it but I would rather go out and buy a good quality used toon first.
I don't think a lot of suppliers will take back stuff that you have pulled off the boat by yourself, most will shift the blame to the mfg. and claim it's under their warranty and only the mfg. should be doing the work.
Most warranties read that way.
Good luck with your hunt for a toon.
