Hello,

I am seeking the opinion(s) of which of the previously mentioned brands are the best in the form of well thought out construction and ease of maintenance. I am looking to buy in the 36 -38 foot range one of these sport fishers in the 1980-1990 year range.

Re: Bertram, Hatteras, Topaz or Phoenix

I'd definately narrow it down between the Bertram or the Topaz and lean a little towards the Topaz. Had a 36 footer for a few years, solid as a rock. Ran Bertrams for a long time as well, not too shabby either. The Topaz has probably less 'creature' comforts than the rest but she is one tough fishing machine. Ease of maintenance - well, that depends pretty much on you. If you're talking about the fit and finish then they all require washing, waxing, etc. The propulsion system would be another story. Maintenance is nothing more than how many hours you plan on spending to keep her looking good.

Thanks for the opinion. I have fished or ran the above boats in different sizes and year models and now it's my turn to buy one I guess. Clarifying my maintenance question Is this boat designed with maintenance in mind that is can you see it, reach it etc. As you know many boats are a nightmare for maintenance due to design. This boat will be located away from any services so maintenance will be a priority vs "pretty design". I 'm leaning towards a 38 Topaz convertible.
