Hey up to date gurus out there, can those who done any research suggest what is the best 2002-2003 40-60 HP motor on the market regardless of cost.

Is 4 stroke or 2 stroke better?

I will be using it for fishing, crabbing, and a bit of general boating on an aluminium 4.3m runabout.

I would want to include PTT electric start and battery charging obviously.

Mike,

I don't think there are any BAD ones among the top names.

The best one is the one you can get parts and service for, in your neck of the woods.

I agree with Rick, and with DJohns.

They are all good. The JohnnyUki is the best.

Re: Best 40 - 50HP Outboard on the market.

I prefer the Yamaha 4-stroke 50 hp. I have two of them and they are flawless.

Here's some info....

The Honda BF50 does not come standard with trim and tilt. That's why it's advertised at only 198 lbs. It is carburated and it sits on the smallest 3-cylinder block...same one as their 40 hp at 808 cc. Honda doesn't make a 60 hp.

The Suzuki DF50 is fuel injected which is nice. But it weighs in at 243 lbs and its a 3-cylinder. It sits on the same block as the 40 hp Suzuki at 815 cc, but the 50 runs out at a high 6500 rpm. I don't believe it comes with the two stage trim/tilt, only tilt. It has an enclosed timing chain rather than a belt. Suzuki does make a 60 hp, but it weighs in at a whopping 359 lbs.

The Johnson 50 is almost identical to the Suzuki, but I believe it may have trim/tilt. Suzuki supplies Johnson, so same with the 40 and 60 too.

The Mercury 50 hp is also EFI which is nice. But it too comes in at a heavy 248 lbs. As an inline 4-cylinder, it has a large 995 cc block, the same one the 60 hp uses. Their 40 hp EFI drops down to a 3-cylinder 747 cc at 216 lbs. The Merc 50 puts out the highest charging of the 50's at 20 amps.

The Yamaha F50 is a carbed 935 cc inline 4-cylinder which has it's own unshared block. It weighs in at 233 lbs. It has some neat features like fresh water flush. Yamaha's F40 drops down to a 3-cylinder at a light 181 lbs. And Yamaha has a fairly new (in 2002) F60 which sits on it's own unique 4-cyliner block at 244 lbs.

I like the Yamaha because it is tried and true. After that it would be the Merc 50 EFI, Suzuki DF 50, Johnson 50, and lastly the Honda BF50. But that's just my opinion. :)

Hello Mike,
It doesn't make sense to have a rebadged or US made outboard in Indonesia.
I'd pick the best dealer support in your area.
Any of the Japanese outboards should serve you well.
If I were in your neck of the woods and looking for 40-50 hp.
1.Tohatsu
2.Honda
3.Yamaha
4.Nissan
5.Suzuki

Let us know what you come up with Mike.

Forktail makes a good arguement for Honda.
It has the best power to weight ratio. It's BF50 with PTT weighs five more pounds at 203lbs.

I'm still sticking to Tohatsu as your best choice.

Re: Best 40 - 50HP Outboard on the market.

All the replies were fantastic value guys and have given me some sound arguments to base my decisions on.

Just for the record I actually work in Indo however am an Australian that returns a few times a year here for R&R, so I would be looking for any of the brands mentioned that are all serviced here in Queensland Australia.

Having said that my leaning is toward the Yamaha but I just need to ascertain how much it is, changeover cost from the old 85 Evinrude 40HP and of course the weight difference if any? On that note would anyone know the weight of a 40 HP Evinrude with PTT etc?

Thanks again.

Re: Best 40 - 50HP Outboard on the market.

Skinnywater, power to weight is a relative term with outboards, mainly because the "power" is measured at the prop shaft output....after gearing.

In comparison, the Honda BF50 is only a 808 cc 3-cylinder engine. It is 187 cc smaller than the 995 cc Merc 50 4-banger and 127 cc smaller than Yamaha's 935 cc F50 4-banger. This is about a 20% difference in displacement...a significant amount. I would guess the Honda 50 engine itself makes 10-15% less BHP than the others.

Because of it's smaller displacement, Honda must use a larger gear ratio to accomplish and maintain the same 50 hp at the prop shaft. This usually means smaller pitch props and slower top speeds as well.

The gear ratio for the Merc is 1.83. The Yamaha is 1.85. But the Honda is 2.09. The smaller 3-cylinder 815 cc Suzuki DF 50 has an interesting 2.27 ratio, and has to rip out 6500 rpm to make the 50 hp. Yamaha's High-Thrust F50 is a 2.33 ratio, more closer to what Honda and Suzuki run.

It's not uncommon to find a 15 or 17 pitch prop on the Merc and Yamaha 50's, where a 10-13 pitch is more common on the Honda and Suzuki 50's.

Yes, prop shaft hp is prop shaft hp. But it is what you can do with that power that counts. The Honda is certainly a great outboard and it has many benefits for some people. For me, I prefer the extra cylinder, 20% bigger displacement, smaller gear ratio, and ability of the engine to pull a bigger prop. I can sacrifice 30 lbs for that. Heck, that's the weight of a small Chinook. Besides, I prefer trim/tilt, remote control, fresh water flush, etc, come as standard equipment. :)

Forktail, this is excellent! Finally I have the opportunity to discuss a situation/problem that I do have with my Honda. It seems you have greater knowledge about my BF50 then I, or a couple of Honda service departments. The situation/problem has everything to do with ratio, power and prop application you are conveying here.

Since this will be a separate thread, I'd like to start a separate one.
"Honda BF50 gear ratio's"
I invite your input, skill and knowledge on both the situation and problem.

I'm no expert on the Honda skinny, but I'll give it a try. See you there....

Hey Forktail...I like that chain on the Suzuki...the belt on my Mariner doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

Do you know if anyone is using hydraulic valves or shims for adjustment?

Re: Best 40 - 50HP Outboard on the market.

The chain is nice. I haven't heard any problems because of it. Then again, maybe it's luck, but I've never had a belt fail me either. In fact I've never needed to replace one.

Think of all those belt driven cams in autos out on the free-way. They seem to work.

There's a real mix-mash of valve train technology out there. The newer Yamaha's use no rocker arms and need no adjustment. Suzuki has the hydraulic chain adjuster. Then there's the old belts, etc. They all seem to work ok. :)
