Best anchor line ?

Hi-need to replace anchor and line .Do some anchoring in the Columbia river and also more mellow rivers and lakes with varied bottoms . Looks like claw or plow anchors are the best for my situation . But what is better strand or braided line ? Thanks

Braid, go to Fishermans & Marine Supply and they will set you up with everything you need.

Most anchor rodes are twisted nylon strand. This provides greater stretch to reduce the tendency to have the anchor pulled free by wave action etc.

Twisted nylon doesn't work very well for the type of anchoring and anchor systems we do here, it's braid all the way. I live in the same part of the world as muskrat.

As ondarvr said, Fishermans has everything you need separately, but also offers an entire anchoring setup with easy retrieval system for the Columbia all ready to go. They offer it in 2 sizes, one for smaller size boats with a G2 size buoy and the other with a G3 all ready to go in a 5 gallon bucket. Both have braided nylon line for the anchor rode.

Unfortunately, this is simply not true. Nylon line provides stretch. The amount of stretch is dictated by teh materials and manufacturing. Climbing rope has significantly more stretch than marine line. Climbing rope only comes in braided/kermantle. So to state that twisted provides more stretch is simply untrue. My apologies as no offense is intended.

I like the 3/8"Braided Nylon because it's a bit smoother and easier on my hands than the Twisted Rope. If you're fishing in deeper water, changing locations a good bit, an anchor rope can be pretty rough on the old skin! Good Luck!

When I pull my anchor in I throw it in an anchor locker. The braid comes out the same way it went in. When I used twist, it would often knot up a few layers down and get all tangled.

Which is why 3 strand twisted isn't used for climbing.

Well if you are going to do it the primatve way and just tossing overboard and pulling by hand i guess anything will work. If you are using a windless look in the book for type of line to use.This isn't.a climbing issue.

He has an 18' Starcraft, I'm assuming no windless. Local knowledge, techniques and equipment work with, and are designed for, braid.

get a ball retreiver and the braid line I use a rocking horse anchor on the Columbia myself - similar boat a 21 foot crestliner

one thing about the anchor there is a chain along the shank, it is attached at the hook end of anchor firmly - but it held at the other end with a wire tie so if the anchor hangs on a tree or rock the wire tie breaks and you pull the anchor staight up - the rode is tied to the chain

i have saved my anchor quite a few times

Another thing, depending on how often you anchor, how deep, speed of current, method of anchor retrieval, weight of anchor, how tough your hands are and a few other things you need to choose the diameter of the braid. 3/8 is plenty strong, but can be tough on your hands, I use 5/8 because I have a very heavy anchor and it's normally shallow, but if the current if fast and/or it's deep, there can be a great deal drag on it which may pull your anchor. 1/2 is sort of a happy compromise.
