new to the trolling motor world..

what is the best Battery type for a trolling motor if my primary use is for the trolling motor with very small use for possible lights and maybe a fish finder someday.. these would be rarely used for now.. so just trolling from time to time for lake fish.

I have a 14ft Lowe Aluminum with a 20hp johnson on it already.

so..
Deep Cylce or Dual purpose?

and whats the difference in Group24, Group31. etc...

Either one will do. I use a combo for my starter battery which my stereo is hooked up to so I tend to run that one down while hanging out in a cove for hours on end.

Deep cycle is probably what you want strickly for trolling. Walmart has decent batteries for around $79. Just try and only run it down to around 20% rather than flat and charge it back up as soon as you get home. Should get like 5 years or more if you treat it correctly.

Keep it hooked up to a $6 float charger (harbor freight) when you are not using it after boating season. Keep it on a piece of wood and not directly on the cement if you store it in a basement or garage.

Deep cycle. The larger the number of the group, the larger the battery. I would go with at least a Group 27.

thanks.. deep cycle it is.. 24, 27 or 31 will do? like pretty much any group will work? just depends on how much space i want to use up or what fits into my battery case?

i have one of those marine battery cases that has a cig type lighter input and i have a Solar charger that plugs into that..
anyone know how well those charge while on the water?

Maybe if your boat was moored in the sun all day some solar charges would top it off but you need a decent charger to put it on when you get home. The run like 29-69 for a black and decker at walmart.

Check the battery size when you check them out. There are some higher capacity ones but they are very wide and heavy especially for a 14 foot aluminum. I'd get the highest capacity in the standard size. Expect to pay around $79.

In 14 boat you really need to be aware of your weight distribution. A group 27 Deep Cycle is probably about the biggest you want to go. Johnson Controls makes the majority of the batteries on the market today. KMart/WalMart sell them as well as Interstate. The RCA rating is what you need to be looking at. RCA (Reserve Cranking Amps) is a time rating in minutes and is based on a 25amp load. Your 40lb motor will pull about 30 amps. A little math and you ca estimate your run time. The reserve cranking amps is based on depleteing 60% of the batteries charges (40% remaining). A deep cycle should never be run below 40% unless it is a Gel Cell which can go to 20%.

I run two Group 29 lead acid Interstate batteries with a rated charge cycle number of 200. This means that I can recharge the batteries 200 times and then I should replace them. Pay attention to that number or your liable to be dissappointed in the lifetime of the less expensve batteries.
