Im looking to install a new bilge with an integrated float switch. Can anyone recommend a good one? I dont mind paying money for one that is going to last for a while but I dont want one that s going to crap out on me in the first week.

Re: best bilge

the 3 wire auto/manual pump with built in switch. works automatically, and with a dash switch, if you want to turn it on manually. they are all decent pumps. i also like to use a manual pump, as back up, totally independent, of each other. different batteries, thru hulls and hoses.

Yes, bilge pump. So Rule is the best? is there an equation as to how many gallons per hour for the size of the boat? I have a 20 foot Glastron

How Big..well, how big is determined by what Tashasdad said...as big as will fit in the bilge, and clamp to the overboard drain fitting..i'd go at least 2000...no such thing as overkill on keeping the boat from sinking:D

I like Mayfair?s Ultimate Combo auto pumps.

If I?m understanding the description correctly the switch has no float and no moving parts, it electronically ?senses? water and switches pump on as needed. Looks like the round Rule auto pumps cycle on and off periodically to determine if water is present, which doesn?t make sense to me at all, and the oblong shaped Rule pumps are advertised as having a ?non-mercury? float switch which would seem to have a moving float that could become jammed by debris. Truly, I don?t know if the Rule or the Mayfair switch will be more reliable, but, generally speaking, components without moving parts tend to be more reliable that components with.

Re: best bilge

I have 3 different RULE type pumps in my bilge of my 1989 SeaCraft and the all still work, although the bait well pump has never be turn on({-;), but the main bilge pump has the wedge shaped switch and is still working to this day. I don't get any type of water instrusion into the bilge except at wash down and is I forget to pull the drain, it will kick on when I come up or back down the ramp.

Re: best bilge

I have had the automatic rule for years with no problems. It cycles on every so often, and if there is water present, pumps it out, if not it shuts off. You don't have to deal with float switches or anything. It is space efficient and takes no effort to install.

An automatic bilge is a must imo. I've seen too many people realize they forgot the plug when the water is above the bilge coming into the boat. With an automatic pump your going to know right away.

Thanks for the info on these. As the owner of a very leaky boat I think I'm going to get one of these. I just have a manual one now.
