The foam/neopren vests are very nice, but I prefer a one piece vest with a cloth covering on my bare skin. Like this one:

I'd add a direct link, but they are not allowed. :D

I think it depends on were you are and who your with

If your alone only a good quality TYPE 1 is going to help you in the worst case of hitting your head or very cold water

I find the neoprene heavier so I also prefer than the regular ones. If you don't mind spending more money, and you are going to wear it all the time then I would go with the automatic inflatables ones.

I understand that your query is brand and model specific.

With that acknowledged, the best ones are the ones that are properly fitted and secured while in and around water and boating activities, each and every time.

Where do you live? Inflatables are well over a $100 for quality ones.

Re: Best life jackets to wear?

The best life jacket is the one you will wear.

I do a lot of water sports with the family, so I like the neoprene vests. It seems like the neoprene vests retain less water when someone boards the boat from the water. I had the nylon jackets at first, but then I would watch a puddle form under the feet of the person wearing it when they boarded my boat. I always like to minimize the incoming water, and the neoprene vests seem to be the best at doing this. I could not believe the amount of water that would get trapped in the nylon fabric, and then slowly drain into the boat. The nylon vests do have the advantage of being lighter, and cheaper on the wallet. I now use my old nylon vests as spares when I have extra guests on board. The inflatable vests are great for emergency purposes, but they are not intended for regular use. Since I am always in the water, an inflatable vest is not practical for me, but I see it as a good idea for someone who intends to stay in the boat.

Re: Best life jackets to wear?

I look for two things.
1: The jacket has at least 15 pounds of lift
2: It fits good and is comfortable so you will wear it.

The inflatables are good. The automatics should work but if I buy one would also want to know it has a manual valve as well just in case. One thing to know is the inflatables only count as a lift jacket if you are wearing it.

Ladies sometimes get conserned how they look it the jacket so take them with you.

You will find better selection in the spring at the begining of the boating season.

Jackets for kids must be in the proper size to be legal.

West marine has a good selection in the spring.
