I have a half dozen of them and can never seem to find them.

That said, I'm putting one more on my Xmas list, but I want a great one.

Quality ones are good, but i'm looking for one that is good for "feed" also, if that is the right term. That is where you can play the tape a good distance, before it "goes limp" and buckles. This is annoying as I measure mostly alone, so no one is holding the other end.

I have heard that some tape are better than other's in this respect.

Any comments appreciated.

I have a mess of tape measures, growing up with a general contractor for a dad, I think I got tape measures for almost every Christmas from the time I was old enough to use one!!

But I was at Ace Hardware a couple of years ago, looking in their bargain bin and actually found a tape measure that I love!

It is a 26 footer, stainless steel case, magnetic tip on it, as well as a LED light that can be positioned to see the tape reading when needed, it is 1"1/4 wide and the feature I like the most!!!! is it will not retract on its own, you have to squeeze the bottom lever to release the tape to retract. The best thing is the price...I paid all of, yup your not going to believe it, but it was only $6.99!!!!!

I know, I figured it would wear out right away, but I have dropped this thing off the roof, set the compressor on top of it, I mean I have beat the crap out of it and it still works great.

It was made by a company called "Illinois Industrial Tool" and I am telling you what, I would buy several more of them if I could find them!

I just looked through their website and unfortunately, they don't list the one I bought!

But I also notice they make tools for other companies, so perhaps this is one they made for Ace exclusively.

Dude, my dad's had a tape measure with that feature since I was about 6 years old. LOL

lol...yes... I ran a framing business for two years. And does a year as a cabinet maker's apprentice count for anything? or the fact that I'm an avid wood worker?

yes... I mean when they become sloppy, which don't take much for the cheap-o's.

Just making sure. I saw one guy in HD pick up every tape measure and complain that every one of the hooks were loose. All I could do was shake my head.

And I forgot to add most of my tapes are in tenths and hundreths. Nobody steals em' .
