personally i think the evinrude etec is the best engine in 2013 evinrude has done an amazing job of the 2 stroke technology and can still compete with all of the 4 stroke engines and beat them when it comes to tourque and overall rpms. they also have a second gear on the engine so when the engine gets to a certian rpm it changes gears and the engines rpms go up a lot more i think that is the thinking that will evolutionise the outboard world please give your opinions though.

Re: best outboard engine made in 2013

Sorry, Sir. I don't recall any outboard engine having a transmission. They're all direct drive motors, except the Suzuki that has a reduction gear below the power head that adds about .5:1 to their gear ratios.

The ETEC is a fine outboard motor, but there again Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki motors are also great.

I don't have an Evinrude dealer in my retail market to service any ETEC motor. Dealer support is so important to me. Another important factor is resale value and initial cost--neither of which you will find best on an ETEC.

All that really matters is if you have a good dealership and if your ETEC powered boat does what you ask out of it. These motors have been out for a few years, and they appear to be doing a good job for many owners.

Soooo, which oil is the best? What do y'all think of ethanol?

If you use ethanol and synthetic oil together in a 4 stroke OB, your anodes will fall off; not so with ETEC.

Yeah no... No modern small boat has multiple gears, and there is a reason for it. You actually don't gain anything, and any gain is offset by the overall drop in efficiency. The prop IS the gearing in the boat, and technologies like vented props allow your boat to have a constantly variable transmission ratio on the low end, without the efficiency hit on the top end.

I'm done with 2 strokes. My next motor will be a Suzuki or Yamaha 4 Stroke.

Might as well add Johnson to the list since they run Suzuki powerheads.... I have zero complaints, except the extra weight...

I was under the impression that BRP dropped the Johnson Line.

In my HP class, the difference between a 300hp 4 stoke and a 300hp 2 stroke is #30 lbs. The 3 gallon oil tank on the two stroke weighs roughly the same when full.

Shows you how I've kept up. Looks like they were gone in 2007? E-tecs go up to 300hp..... My 60hp 4 stroke is 24#s heavier than a 90hp 2 stroke in the same year, for which it's rated.....

You're right: the first gear is the starter drive gear and it spun the flywheel up to around 500rpm. Once there, the engire actually fire and the rpm really kick up!

Motor brand popularity is a regional thing. Here the vast majority are Yamaha with Merc having 20% of the market and all the rest making up about 15%. In FL Merc is the most popular. Todays buyers want a 4 stroke for the most part. Check resale on 2 and 4 stroke and the 4 holds the value better. Not saying one is better than the other but 4s outsell 2s.

Let's see Mercury outboards are the best, just to answer the original question. . . . , along with Valvoline oil . . . and Ethanol is great in moderate amounts of course). :D :D :D

The best outboard out there is the one that matches your boat's paint scheme the best.

My mechanic is Merc certified. Says if not for Merc he would have to find another job. Has Yamaha on his 2 boats.

Re: best outboard engine made in 2013

This is one of the crazier postings I've recently seen. Let me summarize the above postings:
1. Suzuki's may be popular somewhere they have a great dealer, but U.S. Suzuki dealers are few and far between in most of the country.
2. In 1985, Yamaha assaulted Mercury dealers, and turned Merc. dealers into Yamaha dealers in 1 year. Things have not changed. I've been to 15 islands in the Caribbean/Bahamas and the Mediterranean in the last 2 years only to find more Yamaha engines than any others.
3. Bigger Suzuki's have a 2 piece drive shaft with a planetary gear under the power head. They push larger, slower turning, higher pitch props than other brands with a 2.5:1 gear ratio on some models.
4. All brands of oil are good if they have the proper ratings. Mercury & Yamaha purchase oils from other companies with their specs.
5. Ethanol gas is causing all kinds of problems in boats because boats are not commonly run every day. Most problems are with 90/10 that ages attacking rubber parts in the fuel system.
6. Suzuki did make some powerheads for Johnson. Most older Mercury powerheads are Yamaha motors. They were all great.
7. 4 stroke motors pull better prices on the used market than 2 strokes.
8. Comparing outboards is like saying whether a Ford/Chevy/Ram/Toyota truck is best. They all have their pros and cons--and they're all plenty good. I personally have a new F150 Yamaha--after my Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke gave me 27 years of great service.
