Re: Best PC upgrade ever! 6 months later...
we will still need the power of the pc the question is do we need the personal part of the pc. Once we get enoght band width on the internet then cloud storage and processing may be what 90% of people end up with. More power and storage then a home pc with the flexability that any device can be used with no fear of viruses etc. Im not to bothered if my processor or hard drive is on my desk or in a data center as long as i can access it with common tools like the keyboad and mouse im happy. Until that time im happy with my ssd drive as im finding it saves on the electric bill which was a side affect i would not have considered. (i hate waiting while booting a pc to use it for a few mins then waiting to shut it down but the ssd makes this fast and easy so my pc no longer stays in sleep mode for weeks on end like it use to and with the ammount of power used on the liquid cooling/fans im sure im saving a few bucks)
Have to disagree. Smartphones and tablets do an "ok" job operating as dumb terminals tied to the internet but they just don't have what it takes for real work and heavy lifting. I can't imagine ever trying to bang out lines of code on one, or creating video, or even very basic CAD. Secondly, and I have seen this play out before, dumb terminals are limited to what ever the powers controling the server want you to have and you take it in the form they offer it. Not much different than the days of "big iron" in the front office. When PC's offer frlexibility and capabilities far beyond anything a dumb terminal is capable of the trend will swing back in their favor. The issue IMHO is that Microsoft has been focused on enterprise computing (80% of heir sales) which means "MS Office" that they haven't pushed new technology. As many have noted, they do little or nothing to use multi-core CPUs anywhere near capacity.
