Not a single mention of Yes?

And nobody here likes bands with horns? Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, and that one-hit wonder, Bill Chase (remember Get It On?). I guess "it ain't what they call Rock & Roll."

Rush drummer Neil Peart: a solid wall of sound all by himself.

My favorite concert: 1981 Rolling Stones in the Cotton Bowl. Two back-up bands: Jimmy Vaughn & the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and ZZ Top!

Bleaaccchhhhh!

I can't believe the number of bands mentioned here who only had a few popular songs. The title of this thread is BEST rock bands of the '60s & '70s. Not EVERY band!

While it is debatable from one person to the next about his/her particular tastes, it is not even a question that most of these bands aren't worthy of mention on a Who's Who of Rock list.

Here's an idea. Let's call this thread the "Band I identify most with my youth". That, at least, would not trivialize the performances and contributions of Rock's truly great bands.

Best overall, virtuoso guitarist: Steve Vai. The guy plays everything and every style of music. Rock, jazz, heavy metal, classical... you name it!

Best drummer: Neil Peart from RUSH. Have you ever seen him play in concert or seen him in videos? Wow... The guy has tympanis and gongs and chimes and all sorts of equipment going all the way around him. He isn't "just a drummer"... He is a skilled percussionist!

Best bassist: Les Claypool from Primos. My God, have you seen this guy play?!? I mean, he plays the bass like it is a lead guitar!! Absolutely unbelievable!

Butch A.

The Doors, even my kids today like them. Morrison was a bit of a crud, though.

Jinx

I'll start with Boston, great Guitar lix, and driving sound.

I used to fly radio control models with that guy Tom who founded Boston when he was at MIT. He showed us how to tune our RX's.

Best was Hendrix, no competition as far tech skills.
