The first commercially sold pre-sliced loaf of bread went on sale on July 7, 1928—exactly 98 years ago today.

The bread was produced by the Otto Frederick Rohwedder slicing machine and sold by the Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe. The loaf was marketed as "Kleen Maid Sliced Bread."

Rohwedder had spent years developing a machine that could not only slice bread uniformly but also wrap it afterward so it would stay fresh. Many bakers were skeptical at first, fearing sliced bread would go stale too quickly, but customers loved the convenience.

So beer is still the best thing since before sliced bread?
