I am looking to find out the best kind of wood. I know the optimal choice is marine plywood. However, if a budget is tight is there another type of inexpensive wood that can be used with the proper sealing procedures. I know treated lumber is not a good choice.

Hi Chris,

Lots of people use Aruco plywood. You can also use exterior grade plywood (not treated),which is the cheapest option.

What about sealing, could regular Fiberglass resin be brushed or thinned and sprayed over the wood after being cut and before being assembled and installed.

Only exterior grade plywoods should be used as they have exterior glue. Avoid CDX. ACX or BCX will be ok. You could also use ABX if you can find it.

MDO is Medium Density Overlay and is a plywood product made with douglas Fir and exterior glues. It is a good quality product available most anywhere and will work also

MDO isn't a good choice for fiberglass construction unless you're going to use epoxy resin instead of polyester resin. MDO has a phenolic coating which is basically epoxy and polyester resin won't bond well to it if at all.
