There is effort underway for a new Proposition* in California that will permit voluntary use of the King James version of the Bible as literature in public schools. Also creates a onetime budget of $200 million to purchase the Bibles.

* For those unfamiliar with the legislative process in California, we (voters) collect signatures and legislate ourselves thru Amendments to our State’s Constitution via a popular vote…they are called Propositions. This is necessary because our fulltime legislature will not, does not legislate. But that doesn’t stop us from returning them to office again, and again, and again … We also name airports, parks and state building after them…sometimes while they are still in office.

well rabbit, since I've chastised the extreme
right recently, time to give the left it's due.
why in the world wouldn't you have the best
selling book of all time avail. for students?
simply rediculous!
fully expect the extreme left liberals fight this
tooth and nail on the principle of separation of
church/state.
I would vote for it if I still lived there!
can the state supreme court rule a prop. to be
un-constitutional even if it passes?

Yes, they have…very controversial ruling regarding state benefits for illegal aliens.

I am expecting the legislature to attempt to preempt the Proposition…but I doubt Arnold will sign anything.

My kid's school district recently banned the book "Call of the Wild" by Jack London. Reason: Too violent
If they keep it up and they're going to make me violent

Good as long as I can voluntarily use other religious doctrine I don't see a problem. But I don't see that happening. More reasons to get out of teaching. Sad though. I really enjoy it.
Bassy

Bassy - Having been extremely active in the schools where my children attended, I developed the impression the best teachers were being strangled by regulations and agendas. More often than not, they left the profession.

If someone truly wants to teach, the best thing you can do for them (and the children) is give the teacher the supplies they need and stay out of their way.

Well, Bassy, you and I agree on this one. I have no problem with the bible as literature classes, but I'd like to see other religious texts purchased and used in the same way in a comparitive class.

Somehow, a balanced educational experience is not the goal of the proponents of this proposition, I fear.

The problem with that, Plywoody, is it puts the schools in a position of challenging or offering alternative religious opportunities to children, to the exclusion of the parents. A child’s religious guidance, if any, belongs solely with the parents. I believe the gvt has an obligation to protect that right/responsibility of the parents.

All classes involving comparitive religious subject matter belows well outside of all public schools.

Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

I'm sure there are a gazillion ministires that would donate the bibles and save the state 200 mil.

However, 200 million dollars would purchase a very nice bible for every resident of the state of California.

I'll bet a copy of the King James Version could be given to every school (elementary through college) for less than 2 million.

This also shows the insanity of the proposition process in California (I like your sarcasm rabbit). This same process is what allowed the voters to pass propositions requiring government services with no increase in taxes to pay for it. Rabbit is correct in his biting commentary regarding the legislature in California.

As an expatriated Native Californian enjoying the bliss called Texas, the next proposition should be to limit the legislature to meet only every other year. It seems to work here. No state income tax, an expectation to take care of yourself and others, and, dan it, if you want a park, find a way to pay for it! :D

Rabbit,

Right on the mark. Propositions are for gutless politicians who are afraid to cast a public vote.

My fiance is a teacher and my brother was a teacher. A nobel profession frequently populated by lunatics and the best society has to offer. Unions are doing their best to screw up education but parents have them beat by a mile. The stories of parental irresponsibility boggle the mind. The pervasive mentality is that schools are like auto shops where you drop them (kids) off and they are magically educated. If the kids faulter, then it is the teachers fault. Absolutely no responsibility exhibited by the parents. Unless it has to do with sports, which is quickly becoming a disgrace as well.

I would be more happy if they kept the funding for this program out of the governmental arena. There are more than enough people who would be willing to donate. I also wouldn't mind if they handed out other religious text to my (future) children. The Koran, or whatever. these nutcase terrorists are most surely abusing the teachings of these texts. The problem arises when the fringe types want to hand out some of this new age crap. The next comet that comes by and we have another Kool-aid party. Give an inch and you give a mile.

I will say I would be surprized if this passes.

This is good idea in principle, but not required. Every religious family would already have a bible at their home. Why spend the money to have one in school? Seems like they could use the money on something else.

Pointer94-
You know my world. Your description is right on the mark. Parent responsibility is lacking in a scarey way.

So, does that mean that they will also have copies of the Koran, Torah, and every other known religions, holiest book, in their libraries out there in California?

If not, then why should only the King James version of the Bible be the only one admissible?

What about the others?

Or are those who are supporting this proposition, saying that the King James version of the Bible is the only acceptable religious lititure for their children to read?

Growing up as a catholic I never did understand why King James version was a big deal. My Mom says that the church forbid catholics to read the King James version when she was in college; 50 years ago( sorry Mom) Anyone know? I mean, heck, he was only a king, right? Not an expert.
Bassy

Bassy I may be wrong but I believ the King James version was the first translation in English and the Catholics outlawed it many, many years ago........not sure though. :)

Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

The reason why it was forbidden to read the bible in the catholic church goes back to the fourteenth century when the written word was extremely valuable and the handwritten copies of bibles were chained to the walls of the monastry libraries. It was a time when the church was fighting so called heresies and one of the ways to fight it was by teaching church dogma as opposed to letting non clergy members into the holy secrets of the bible. Then the printing press was invented and suddenly the written word was cheap and easily attained. The catholic clergy which by then had fine tuned its religious teachings in the desired political direction of the times saw a great danger to its power and financial position (these were the days when you could buy forgiveness with money even for crimes you had not yet committed but were planning to commit. The money generated was used to build the st. Peter's Cathedral).
Sure enough it was in 1517 that Luther stuck his proclamations on the church gate of Wittenberg, accusing the church of not following the biblical word and starting the greatest heresy of them all, namely the reformation.
The different protestant groups now started their own translations and encouraged their members to read the bible.the catholic church on the other hand continued in a more paternalistic way and continued forbidding its lay members to read the bible to protect them from misinterpreting the holy word.
Just to prevent any misunderstandings.I am neither catholic nor protestant.

Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

Well I have heard a couple of reasons that may be possable the first is a bit anti-catholic...... they wanted to keep the common man from reading it so as to have more power over them.......the second seems much more resonable which is the catholic higher ups were afraid of the bible being translated wrong so they did what they could to stop it........I believe the orgins of this was much older then your grandma....Im thinking 100's of years ago. Remaember Im no expert so take this with a grain of salt.

oops you beat me too it and your explanation is better as I see it rolmops
