Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

It was forbidden because the Catholic church does not want it's parishoners to READ the Bible. They want you to believe what they tell you. The King James and even better the NIV version of the Bible make the true word of God available and understandable to any of us. At this point you realize that gifts to the Catholic church and prayers to saints and prayers to Mary won't get you to heaven and only a heartfelt belief in Jesus as your Saviour will. The mighty machine that the Catholic churc has become comes to a grinding halt when Catholics read the Bible. I speak from 13 years in Catholic schools and 5 years as an altar boy. No I don't have any horror stories of abuse of any kind. Actually I give credit for my religous upbringing as the foundation for my search for a Relationship with God through the Son. It was my Catholic upbringing that led me to realize a general revelation that there was a supreme power i.e. the glories of nature and the blessing of a well tuned boat on an early morning lake. :) But it was reading the Bible in understandable language that brought me to the truth that the only way to Heaven and The Father was through The Son, and the work He did on the cross for the Love of you and me, as humble and un-worthy as we are. Grace is getting what you don't deserve and Mercy is not getting what you do deserve. I'm a walkin' talkin' example and I praise God every day for it!

I'm a very slow typer but I believe in whole it all makes some sense.

Translations are translations, and are not always compatible, nor are there necessarily precise words in one language to correspond with specific words in another language. It is often a matter of interpretation (and sometimes a specific agenda).
I also grew up Catholic, and their problem was with the specific translation and interpretation. Of course there is no way to tell which is right, as one translation has to be somewhat different from another.

As far as bible as literature, whatever else you think the bible is, it is great literature, and has stood the test of time...As has numerous other religious texts. It would be wonderful, in my opinion, to leave the beliefs and dogma at the door of the classroom and study them as such--but not likely to happen anytime soon, especially at the high school level.

As a literature major in college, I took a class called the "Bible as literature" and even at the college level, there were so many fanatics that would get involved that it was virtually impossible to hold a class that involved any sort of dispassioned discussion..

And it was too bad, in my view.

M&R, it was totally for the second reason.
they were worried some things/meanings would
get lost in translation.
eg. the first commandment in origional Hebrew
says; "though shall not committ murder".
they even said mass in Latin up until the 1950's
in the Catholic church.

I just love to read the negative, right wing
Catholic bashing. totally unfounded as always.
didn't want them to read the bible?... OK, LOL
who spews this sewage to people???
bibles were written by hand and were works of art
that took many, many years to complete a single
copy. nobody could even read in the 1500's, let alone Latin!
printing press wasn't invented for a few hunderd
years yet.

Kinda like looking at the owner’s manual for you car as literature.

Hello Mellow yellow.
I had no intention of bashing the Roman Catholic church. As for the printing press,it was invented in 1430.
As for my feelings about your church,I have always seen the catholic church as a place where people seem quite happy. This is defenitely not a hell and damnation religion.

I did not take offense from your post sir, but
thank you for your kind words. :)
as for printing press, I was thinking 1600's for
some reason. even still, not many people could
read in those days or had the extra money to own
a book as they were pretty expensive.
to suggest the RCC purposely kept people from reading
the bible is ludicrous.
regards,
M.Y.

MY,
My apologies if my post came across as negative or Catholic bashing. That was certainly not the intent. I do not believe, as I have heard some Christians say, that Catholics aren't saved and won't/can't go to heaven. My belief and my point was simply that the church does not encourage Bible study(in my experience) and you don't even find Bibles in the pews of any Catholic church I've been in.

Hello MY
The council of Toulouse in anno domini 1229 severely forbids possession of the bible especially in the vernicular (local language).
On the other hand, the first book that Gutenberg, who was a catholic, printed on his newly invented press was the bible in latin.
So there you have it.If you don't believe it ask any jesuit priest (they are great scholars). To your credit I must add that the reason for this decision was the Albigensian heresy, a very interesting heresy indeed. One I do not wish to discuss here because it may cause strange comments.

Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

maybe i should.....maybe i should not.....but i belive i will add my 2 cents..... first of all WE are living under a new covenent, Jesus Christ. KJV. THE NEW TESTEMENT.ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISIM. Where are we getting all these other religons? the bible says what it means and means what it says! that's the problem today, Man has changed the bible so many times and so many ways. that's the problem. Hear what thus says the LORD!!!!! HE'S gonna be my Judge, not man. remember what the bible says . ONE LORD , ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTSIM. NOT TWO , NOR THREE, NOR FOUR. But one. Now which one are you following? Hope to see you in heaven.
Note: This is not intended to offend any one, but i hope you stop and study the bible for your own self. After all it's your soul.

Re: Bibles Coming To Calif Schools - Lookout Bassy

I would have to say that this has been a most civil and informative thread. As a catholic, I am the first to say that there are some historical atrosities done in the name of god. rolmops, good stuff, I didn't know that. I have enough understanding of the church to know that is not only possible but probable.

I would love to see what would happen if you could put all the religous texts in a class and see how the study fares. They are not only literary but historical texts, that are probably without equal. What we do in the name of religion, sometimes does everyone a disservice. An in-depth literary study of these texts would only leave better educated, well rounded students. I never thought of these texts as literary works, but that is an oversight on my part, and justifies their place in every library. :)
