Re: big help needed

Might sound like a dumb question, but did you install the new primer bulb in the right direction of fuel flow?

Re: big help needed

Not sure about yours, but some of those 60s had the coils and plugs covered by a cast aluminum plate on the head.

Before you go randomly replacing things and spending lot's of money, let's try and narrow down what the problem is. Best place to start is checking for spark. Find where the plugs are, remove them from the head, reconnect the wires and have someone crank the engine while the base of the plug is touching the engine block. You should have a nice bluish white spark across the gap. If so, check the plug gap for .030" and reinstall the plugs.

Next thing I would do is put some properly mixed 50:1 clean fuel into a small squirt bottle so you can squirt a little into the carb intake. Once you squirt in a 1/2 a teaspoon or so, try cranking and see if it will fire. If so, then fuel isn't getting to the engine. remove the fuel line from the carbeurator inlet fitting and hold the hose into a tin can or cup. Squeeze the primer bulb, does fuel come out of the hose? If so, have someone crank the motor and see if fuel squirts out in little spurts, if so the fuel pump is working.

If everything is good to this point, I would suspect plugged jets and passages in the carb requiring dis-assembly. Do a search for cleaning carbs on this forum, there is lot's of good info here. Don't overlook your fuel and oil mix. Too much oil and it can foul the plugs preventing running, and too little and you wreck the engine. carefully measure it out. For a 6 U.S. gallon tank it takes 1 pint (or 1/2 a quart) of oil.

Does your motor have one or two carbs. I believe the earlier ones had only one. I would do as mentioned before and verify spark and compression. At a minimum pull the spark plugs and verify all plugs are equally dirty. To start with I would replace the fuel pump diaphragm and concentrate on the idle circuits of the carb. That is where the mixture adjust screw goes into the carb. There is a welsh plug there that covers three holes. Those holes need to be cleaned with a wire, carb cleaner and compressed air. The fuel pump diaphragm is the minimum rebuild for the fuel pump however anyone of the three check valves in that pump could be bad as well.

If the motor has two carbs you need to do a link and sync.

Re: big help needed

just because my kid took the tank down to the boat this weekend and ran around a little, I noticed he didn't open the vent on the gas tank itself.....
...started looking like a prune...make sure the vent's open...something that easy could starve it & keep gas from flowing.
