If you can find a Force 70 HP it will bolt right up and the controls and wiring harness will hook up. I did this swap last year in a 16' Maxum and it really woke up that little boat. Of course you would be a lot better off to get something other than a Force and change the controls.

thanks mrmerc- i cant believe what dog the 50hp is-i have no speedo but we were going awfully slow-so if i went with another motor say a mercury i would need all new controls?-and this boat will handle a 70hp?? because the coast guard sticker says max. 50hp. sorry but i am new to this boating game-from what i hear i should have shopped around a little more!!! top speed on the 50hp on this boat in your opinion???? thanks

Check the data plate. It will give maximum HP and maximum load for the boat. I suspect it is 90 HP Max +/-

Bob

Just so you know, with the Merc 70 you'll be getting 70hp at the prop, with the Force 85 you'll only get about 76hp at the prop. Merc is a much better motor also.

Craig

The Mercury!! Change over is not too difficult very straight forward. Use ALL stainless steel screws and bolts only.

Bob

Re: bigger motor for bayliner capri??

I would stick closer to the coast gaurd sticker on your Capri. Reason being, you don't have the transom for it..Put two people on the back seat, and get it as close to plane as you can (I know,i know...It won't). But run flat-out,and then cut the throttle...I hope your passengers have swim trunks on and a sense of humour, because they are gonna have wet legs at minimum. :D
All is not lost tho. As Merc140 stated, the Forces were rated at the powerhead as opposed to the prop. A 50HP Merc will give you a 10%increase in HP over the Force 50HP, with no extra transom weight. Don't even look at a 4 cycle, as they are waaay too heavy. And 70HP anything is dangerously overweight, and over powered.
I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, and as I own one of these little river ratz, "I feel your pain"...But it's a good pain, isn't it :D

If the Force is a lot cheaper than the Merc you can go Force, because it would be closer to the origional package offered by U.S.Marine. You would only have to spend a few hundred over the value of the 50 hp. that your going to sell.

Installing a 70 Force would be an easy installation and it should be cheap or it certainly wouldn't be worth doing. If you have a line on a 70 merc with controls go for it it will make a world of difference in the boat. I didn't quite understand though, is the boat really only rated for a 50? If that is the case there is the insurance and liability issue to consider. Aside from that go with the bigger merc.

From the serial number Bayliner will tell you what the max hp is. It looks like the 85 hp Force suits that boat and may of come with it origionally!
