the only strainer is the one in the drain... has many 1/8" holes
have used it for years and nope... no clogs the way that pump works it has two flapper valves built in and diaphragm that is moved by a crankshaft and a connecting rod
IMHO they are superior to the standard centrifugal pump in function and reliability BUT they are noisier and more expensive
