Bilge pump placement..?

Hello..

Does a bilge pump have to be in the bilge..??.

My runabout has a solid floor with no holes or cutouts in it,so Iam reluctant to get out the jigsaw and cut a big hole for a bilge pump. Can I just mount the pump on the floor at the back, beneath the engine area..? Iam sure this will work if I get swamped with a big wave..!! or is that not a good idea.?

Thanks for any help or ideas

Mount it as low as you can. Any water below the pump can't be picked up. I'd glass a wood block for a mount point. Pre drill the block for the pump. Clean up, scuff and epoxy it to the boat bottom, below any floor. Attach & wire up the pump. If you have an outboard you can have the pump outlet in the outboard motor well. Other wise have it come out the driver's side so you can see when the water comes out of the boat.

What kind of boat do you have? Some outboard boats have the bilge pump access panel "outside" in the engine well.
