When you are trailering your boat do you keep your bimini top up or put it down?

Re: Bimini Top

Down, bimini's are not designed to handle freeway speeds.

Many suggest removing the bimini so it doesn't get blown off the boat while towing. I sewed a couple 2" wide Velcro strips into my bimini cover, so I can secure it to the rear cleats while towing.

although they are supposedly rated for speeds around 50 mph it's not a good idea to test them--why put them through the wear and tear plus the risk of coming loose and causing a wreck? You are unnecesarily stressing your fittings.

Short haul low speed with no trees, no problem--whatever is most convenient.

Keep it down and secured for a few reasons:
  • They are not designed for freeway speeds
  • You don't want to have to buy another one if you damage it in transport
  • You don't want to damage your boat
  • You don't want it to fly off your boat in transport possibly injuring someone, killing someone, or causing an accident.
Safety first. Just plan a few extra minutes an the lake to set it up and put it down.

Don't even drive with it folded up and stowed in its boot. I lost one of mine that way.

Tow with mine down, use a velcro strap to keep supports together, use cut piece of life vest as a "biminibumper" keeps the tubing from hitting the boat. Poor design..

short distance and low speed (3 mile trip at 45mph) - I left mine upright folded in its boot

longer trips - folded down laying on the cover, strapped to the boat

moving - removed from the boat, wrapped to not abrade, stored under the cover

pipe insulation works well to keep the supports from banging into each other or wearing on other things.

I always lay it down while trailering . The way mine collapses, I have to bungee the brace on each side to the rear cleat.

I lost mine when the fitting that attaches to the boat cracked. I was going 35 MPH when mine broke and I never found the cover.
