Binnacle question

I am considering replacing my Evinrude with an Evinrude, but have been considering a Yamaha. With that, I will be installing a top mount binnacle (the original center console has a side mount). I am thinking about the Teleflex 309477 Morse SL3 Top Mount which I believe is a generic. Is it? Do you think it wise? Or should I match the binnacle to the OB?

Re: Binnacle question

Depending on the engine manufacturer and even engines from the same manufacturer can have both "push-to-open" as it regards throttle cable operation, and "pull-to-open" the throttle. Many universal controls are able to be set up either way but some are not. You need to determine what engine you are going with and then determine which control you want and whether it works with the selected engine. Don't buy the control first unless it is switchable. Cables will be engine specific or universal cables with engine specific adapters.

If it was myself I'd match the binnacle to the outboard. Less messing around.

Re: Binnacle question

Man. I am the last one to disagree with Boobie; however, I did install a Universal Mount Teleflex Top Mount Binacle control on my center console. The cost was much less than a factory set of top mounts, and the adaptors (included with the kit) made my old cables work just fine. The quality was pretty good as well. You will need to mount your key switch on your dash somewhere along with the kill switch. If you have Trim and Tilt, the switch included in many of the aftermarket model controls will work just fine too.

I know a factory set of controls are very expensive (if you can find them) so the Universal Controls can be used on most model Outboards. at about 1/3 of the price as original.....I would do it again.

Re: Binnacle question

I am leaning toward OB first and match the binnacle to the OB manufacturer. When it's all said and done, and since I will have the marina do it, it makes sense to go for the entire package since I will need OB/binnacle/wiring harness/gauges etc. And it just seems logical and IF I choose the wrong "generic" there's another bunch of problems I don't want to deal with.

The CC box is new so I will have to drill a hole or probably just let the marina do that as well since I don't know the size needed.

Thanks for the tips and advice!

Re: Binnacle question

Thanks again! I made the decision over the weekend to go new. Yamaha 115 with a new binnacle and digital gauges. I got a great price for the whole package from a local dealer not 2 miles from my house. I have always been a Johnson/Evinrude dude so this was like going through withdrawals but after looking at all the stats - Evinrude, Merc, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda - the Yammy came in first place all things considered.
